Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Made Me LOL

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Books That Made Me Laugh Out Loud (Claire @ Book Lovers Pizza)

Hello Readers! Thankfully it’s the last Tuesday of February because it’s getting hard not to repeat books in my goal to use all love-themed books for Top Ten Tuesday this month. 🙂

Fingers crossed that the third time is the charm. For the past two weeks my Top Ten Tuesday posts have been hacked and linked to a spam redirect. I finally had to move to a new web host. Hopefully that has fixed the problem. It just finalized, so we shall see! 😉 It’s been nothing short of a nightmare, so fellow bloggers, don’t skimp on your security!

If you were unable to visit my past TTT posts, I’m including them here. Again. <3

The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss (Dahlia Moss Mysteries, #1) by Max Wirestone

Synopsis:

For anyone who has ever geeked out about something and for fans of The Guild, New Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Big Bang Theory, Veronica Mars.

Meet Dahlia Moss, the reigning queen of unfortunate decision-making in the St. Louis area. She is unemployed, broke, and on her last bowl of ramen. But that’s all about to change. Before Dahlia can make her life any messier on her own she’s offered a job. A job that she’s woefully under-qualified for. A job that will lead her to a murder, an MMORPG, and possibly a fella (or two?)

Goodreads
Rating: [usr 4]

From my Goodreads review:The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss is full of nerdy hipster greatness. Fans of quirky, disheveled, mishap-prone female leads will relish this well-paced who-done-it. And while I am not hip enough to catch all the geek-speak, the delivery had me LOLing.”

Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella

Synopsis:

After being together for ten years, Sylvie and Dan have all the trimmings of a happy life and marriage; they have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, beautiful twin girls, and communicate so seamlessly, they finish each other’s sentences. However, a trip to the doctor reveals they could live another 68 years together… and panic sets in. They never expected ‘until death do us part’ to mean seven decades.

In the name of marriage survival, they quickly concoct a plan to keep their relationship fresh and exciting: they will create little surprises for each other so that their (extended) years together will never become boring.

But in their pursuit to execute Project Surprise Me, mishaps arise and secrets are uncovered that start to threaten the very foundation of their unshakeable bond. When a scandal from the past is revealed that questions some important untold truths, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other after all…

Rating: [usr 4]

From my Goodreads review: “This is my second Sophie Kinsella novel, and I must say they are predictably enjoyable. I enjoy that her characters are realistic, her storylines are current, and that I always find myself laughing out loud.”

Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner

Synopsis:

Weiner’s witty, original, fast-moving debut features a lovable heroine, a solid cast, snappy dialogue and a poignant take on life’s priorities.

For twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie Shapiro. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her friends, her rat terrier, Nifkin, and her job as pop culture reporter for The Philadelphia Examiner. She’s even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body.

But the day she opens up a national women’s magazine and sees the words “Loving a Larger Woman” above her ex-boyfriend’s byline, Cannie is plunged into misery…and the most amazing year of her life. From Philadelphia to Hollywood and back home again, she charts a new course for herself: mourning her losses, facing her past, and figuring out who she is and who she can become.

Goodreads
Rating: [usr 5]

From my Goodreads Review: “First of all, don’t let the title fool you. This book is not really about sex. It’s more about the consequences of sex—emotional and physical. And even more than sex, it’s about love and loss. I expected this to be more like a romance novel, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was witty, smart, and sweet. I highly recommend it!”

Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Simple

Synopsis:

Bernadette Fox has vanished.

When her daughter Bee claims a family trip to Antarctica as a reward for perfect grades, Bernadette, a fiercely intelligent shut-in, throws herself into preparations for the trip. But worn down by years of trying to live the Seattle life she never wanted, Ms. Fox is on the brink of a meltdown. And after a school fundraiser goes disastrously awry at her hands, she disappears, leaving her family to pick up the pieces–which is exactly what Bee does, weaving together an elaborate web of emails, invoices, and school memos that reveals a secret past Bernadette has been hiding for decades. Where’d You Go Bernadette is an ingenious and unabashedly entertaining novel about a family coming to terms with who they are and the power of a daughter’s love for her mother.

Goodreads
Rating: [usr 4]

From my Goodreads Review: “I laughed out loud several times while reading this one. Great characters, a completely unique storyline, set in memorable places.”

Twenty-One Truths About Love by Matthew Dicks

Synopsis:

This heartfelt story is about the lengths one man will go to and the risks he will take to save his family. But Dan doesn’t just want to save his failing bookstore and his family’s finances he wants to do something special.

Dan is an obsessive list maker; his story unfolds entirely in his lists, which are brimming with Dan’s hilarious sense of humor, unique world-view, and deeply personal thoughts. When read in full, his lists paint a picture of a man struggling to be a man, a man who has reached a point where he’s willing to do anything for the love of his life.

Goodreads
Rating: [usr 4]

From my Goodreads review: “If you’ve ever wondered if a book comprised completely of lists would work, Matthew Dicks has proven that it does. This book is a breath of fresh air. Easy to read—but packing plenty of heart—I found myself wanting to highlight every other line and laughing out loud. And I might have even been crying at the end.”

Anna K by Jenny Lee

Synopsis:

Every happy teenage girl is the same, while every unhappy teenage girl is miserable in her own special way.

Meet Anna K. At seventeen, she is at the top of Manhattan and Greenwich society (even if she prefers the company of her horses and Newfoundland dogs); she has the perfect (if perfectly boring) boyfriend, Alexander W.; and she has always made her Korean-American father proud (even if he can be a little controlling). Meanwhile, Anna’s brother, Steven, and his girlfriend, Lolly, are trying to weather a sexting scandal; Lolly’s little sister, Kimmie, is struggling to recalibrate to normal life after an injury derails her ice dancing career; and Steven’s best friend, Dustin, is madly (and one-sidedly) in love with Kimmie.

As her friends struggle with the pitfalls of ordinary teenage life, Anna always seems to be able to sail gracefully above it all. That is…until the night she meets Alexia “Count” Vronsky at Grand Central. A notorious playboy who has bounced around boarding schools and who lives for his own pleasure, Alexia is everything Anna is not. But he has never been in love until he meets Anna, and maybe she hasn’t, either. As Alexia and Anna are pulled irresistibly together, she has to decide how much of her life she is willing to let go for the chance to be with him. And when a shocking revelation threatens to shatter their relationship, she is forced to question if she has ever known herself at all.

Dazzlingly opulent and emotionally riveting, Anna K.: A Love Storyis a brilliant reimagining of Leo Tolstoy’s timeless love story, Anna Karenina―but above all, it is a novel about the dizzying, glorious, heart-stopping experience of first love and first heartbreak.

My Review

From my review: “I can see how this book might be a polarizing one. Most of these characters are wealthy, privileged teens. Their words and actions can be shocking, but I read it more as satire, smiling and laughing out loud as I read.”

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

Synopsis:

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.

Goodreads
Rating: [usr 5]

From my Goodreads review: “I got swept up in the story, even though it seemed highly unrealistic in the beginning. I didn’t even care. The characters were so good, believable and true to themselves. It was a great reminder that great characters make a great book. I laughed. I swooned.”

Enjoy the View (Moose Springs, Alaska #3) by Sarah Morgenthaler

Synopsis:

A grouchy mountaineer, a Hollywood starlet
And miles of untamed wilderness…
What could possibly go wrong?

Former Hollywood darling River Lane’s acting career is tanking fast. Determined to start fresh behind the camera, she agrees to film a documentary about the picturesque small town of Moose Springs, Alaska. The assignment should have been easy, but the quirky locals want nothing to do with River. Well, too bad: River’s going to make this film and prove herself, no matter what it takes.

Or what (literal) mountain she has to climb.

Easton Lockett may be a gentle giant, but he knows a thing or two about survival. If he can keep everyone in line, he should be able to get River and her crew up and down Mount Veil in one piece. Turns out that’s a big if. The wildlife’s wilder than usual, the camera crew’s determined to wander off a cliff, and the gorgeous actress is fearless. Falling for River only makes Easton’s job tougher, but there’s only so long he can hold out against her brilliant smile. When bad weather strikes, putting everyone at risk, it’ll take all of Easton’s skill to get them back home safely…and convince River she should stay in his arms for good.

Rating: [usr 4.25]
My Review

From my review: “While The Tourist Attraction will always hold a special place, the series gets better and better with each new installment. And the third one, featuring Easton’s story, had me cheering and swooning.”

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

Synopsis:

A sparkling and tender novel from the acclaimed author of Love Lettering, full of bickering neighbors, surprise reunions, and the mysterious power of love that fans of Christina Lauren, Sarah Hogle, and Emily Henry will adore.

Sixteen years ago, a teenaged Will Sterling saw—or rather, heard—the girl of his dreams. Standing beneath an apartment building balcony, he shared a perfect moment with a lovely, warm-voiced stranger. It’s a memory that’s never faded, though he’s put so much of his past behind him. Now an unexpected inheritance has brought Will back to that same address, where he plans to offload his new property and get back to his regular life as an overworked doctor. Instead, he encounters a woman, two balconies above, who’s uncannily familiar . . .

No matter how surprised Nora Clarke is by her reaction to handsome, curious Will, or the whispered pre-dawn conversations they share, she won’t let his plans ruin her quirky, close-knit building. Bound by her loyalty to her adored grandmother, she sets out to foil his efforts with a little light sabotage. But beneath the surface of their feud is an undeniable connection. A balcony, a star-crossed couple, a fateful meeting—maybe it’s the kind of story that can’t work out in the end. Or maybe, it’s the perfect second chance . . .

  1. I am really surprised, because I read 9 of these. We read a lot of the same books! I did short-list Singles Day for my list. It was a lot of fun, and all the Moose Springs books made me laugh out loud. I adore that series. I was most excited to see Dahlia Moss on this list. I thought that book was hilarious!

    1. Yay!! I love that we have similar tastes. Dahlia Moss doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Did you read the next installment in the series? I haven’t because I didn’t realize it was a series until I was working on this post. Ha!

  2. I’ve only read Enjoy the View and although I didn’t end up loving it as much as the others there were definitely moments it had me gasping! Those marmot scenes especially! I’ll never forget it 😂 Haha! Great list, Dedra. I’m really looking forward to checking out quite a few of these titles (hopefully soon)!

  3. Great list Dedra. I have the Dahlia Moss book on my kindle and keep meaning to read it, then it gets bumped down when I add new books. I am going to move it up again. Several on your list that I read and loved, but some I will need to check out.

  4. So sorry you had to move hosts, etc. I noticed something seemed off with your Top Ten posts the last few weeks. Glad you’re back. 🙂

I still need to read Sarah’s Alaska books; ‘Singles Day’ has a really cute cover; someday I should read a novel by Sophie Kinsella (her books sound so fun); and I still haven’t read ‘Bernadette’ despite it being on my shelf for WAY too long. Someday! 😀
