Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This weekβs prompt is Minor Characters Who Deserve More Love!
Hello Readers! I hope you’re all staying well. Today we’re talking about minor or secondary characters who deserve more attention, which is such a great topic! I love when a minor character steals some of the spotlight from the main characters. Well-rounded, layered minor characters only make our protagonist shine more! I’ve chosen ten minor characters I think deserve all the love—and maybe even their own book!
Be sure to check out my current Giveaway and enter to win a set of Myrtle Hardcastle Mystery books. π

1
Nina from Six of Crows
Nina from the Six of Crows duology always keeps her wits about her despite all the trauma she endures. I know she also makes an appearance in the King of Scars duology, but I haven’t had a chance to read those yet.
2
Declan from Call Down the Hawk
I was not a fan of Declan in The Raven Cycle, but Stiefvater being the great writer she is, showed us the person behind all that animosity in Call Down the Hawk.
3
Jessamine from the Shadowhunters
One of the hardest to love characters in the Shadowhunter Universe is Jessamine. But she always steps up when the situation demands it.
4
Fizzy from The Soulmate Equation
One of my favorite things about The Soulmate Equation was Jess’s best friend Fizzy. She was hilarious. And deserves her own book!
5
Kitty from the To All the Boys Series
Lara Jean’s youngest sister Kitty in the To All the Boys series almost steals the show. I’m hoping someday Jenny Han gives Kitty her own book.
6
Ash from the Moose Springs, Alaska Series
I’ve been hoping Easton’s helicopter-pilot-sister-Ash from the Moose Springs, Alaska series would get her own book each time she makes an appearance. Morgenthaler has announced that a fourth book is coming in early 2022. Fingers crossed it’s Ash’s book!
7
Aunt Sarah from With the Fire on High
If I remember correctly, we never even meet Emoni’s pen-pal Aunt Sarah from With the Fire on High except through her letters, but she gave Emoni great advice and great recipes!
8
The Marigold Crew from Fable
I LOVED all the crew of the Marigold in Fable. I still haven’t read Namesake, but I’m hoping they all get more attention in the second installment…. I kid you not, the day after I wrote the previous sentence, I received a newsletter from Adrienne Young with a link to a free PDF of Tides: Paj & Auster!
9
Richie from The Flatshare
I recently finally read The Flatshare and it included so many great secondary characters. One of my favorites was Leon’s brother, Richie. Even though he had his own problems, he was a great friend to Leon. I would love for him to have his own book.
10
Marie from The Simple Wild Series
Jonah’s ex-girlfriend Marie—the flying veterinarian—from The Simple Wild Series is pretty much the antagonist in the first book but by the final book I was intrigued by her. I would read her book!
Did you love any of these secondary characters? Let me know in the comments!
Nina deserves so much more love! She’s so funny, she doesn’t get enough hype!! Although Jessamine really is so hard to love π
Yes! Have you watched the Netflix adaptation yet? I wish Nina would have had more screen time, but I’m hopeful she will in the future!
I haven’t seen it yet, I wanted to read the Shadow and Bone trilogy first, but I’ve heard a lot of people say they wish Nina had more screen time, hopefully in season 2 we’ll see more of the Crows π
What a great list Dedra. I am going to steal Fizzy for my list, I loved her. Ash is also a good one. It is taking me some time to put this list together, because there are so many to choose from.
Thank you! Go ahead and steal away. π Maybe if we all keep asking for a Fizzy book we’ll get one. It was a tougher list to come up with. I think I ended up going through my five-star books on Goodreads to get ideas.
I did the same, but once I got started, I could have added so many more.
I do feel like there are many more people to meet from both Moose Springs and The Simple Wild. I thought I heard something about Tucker returning there with a spinoff. I have been lobbying for Kitty to get a series/book for years. Age her up a bit, and then I get the added benefit of seeing what happened with Laura Jean and Peter.
Oooh, a spin-off of The Simple Wild would be amazing! Seems like it would be almost a guaranteed success. And Kitty also seems like a natural way to continue To All the Boys. I would love to have a peek at Lara Jean and Peter, too. π
Fun list! I haven’t read these books yet, so I don’t know the characters. Still, I know what you mean about how good authors can take secondary characters I’m not so sure about and make them shine in their own novels.
My post this week
Yes, it seems like a hard task to make secondary characters shine. But for me, it usually is a sign of a great book. π
Agreed! Good secondary characters can also be a breath of fresh airβadding a touch of humor to a serious book, for example.
Yessss Kitty all the way! I think a story of her when she’s grown up would be so cute, I loved how bright and bubbly she was π Great post!
here’s my TTT if you’d like to give it a look!
I know!! Anytime she was on the page (or screen), I couldn’t help smiling. π
What a great list! I agree with so many of these! I think I actually heard that Kitty is getting her own Netflix movie (and Han is cowriting the script with someone I can’t recall….maybe Siobhan Vivian?). I don’t think I’m dreaming that I heard that π
You know, now that you mention it, I think I did too! But I think I remember wishing it would be a series, as well. π
I thought I commented on your post but I guess my comment didn’t go through π₯Ί BUT I love your list! I had Richie on mine as well and I had some characters from WTFOH, too. I really hope that the fourth book in Moose Springs is gonna be about Ash (but this pick is definitely one of the more popular ones this week)! π
Oh no! I haven’t had any comments disappearing for the past few months. I hope it’s not messing up again.
Oh yay, we’re still thinking alike! Richie was such a great character. I’m gonna jump over and see your list now. π
Totally agree with you about Kitty! I would read those books in a second! And I have yet to read King of Scars either, but I do like Nina! Also agree about the Marigold crew- they made the whole series for me!
Yay!!
I saw “The Flatshare” on someone else’s list from this topic/week. I still haven’t read it, but it sounds fun! Apologies for the delay in visiting here, but thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland on this week, and for the anniversary wishes. π
