Synopsis:
A brilliant physicist studying the nature of time embarks on a journey to prove that those we love are always connected to us, leading to surprising revelations in this fresh and unique love story.
Sophie Jones is a physics prodigy on track to unlock the secrets of the universe. But when she meets Jake Kristopher during their first week at Yale they instantly feel a deep connection, as if they’ve known each other before. Quickly, they become a couple. Slowly, their love lures Sophie away from school.
When a shocking development forces Sophie into a new reality, she returns to physics to make sense of her world. She grapples with life’s big questions, including how to cope with unexpected change and loss. Inspired by her connection with Jake, Sophie throws herself into her studies, determined to prove that true loves belong together in all realities.
Spanning decades, The Love Proof is an unusual love story about lasting connection, time, and intuition. It explores the course that perfect love can take between imperfect people, and urges us to listen to our hearts rather than our heads.
My thoughts
(Spoiler free)
The Love Proof had me asking big questions. Especially when I found myself reading into the wee hours of the night. Are those we love always with us? If you’ve experienced true love, will it continue to exist across all realities? Is first love the love that changes us the most? I’m not sure those are questions we will ever be able to definitively answer, but this unique novel had me pondering them anyway.
“It was when you recognized someone you’d never met, because somehow you knew they were the same.”
Madeleine Henry, The Love Proof
While Jake and Sophie fall in love quickly—almost instantly—the author makes it work. I believed in their connection and found myself pulled along as they fell. They spend an all-consuming four years together through college until Jake worries Sophie’s devotion to him is destroying her own dreams. This leads to big changes for both of them, and their lives that take paths I’m not sure they were meant to take.
There is so much to discuss with this novel, but it’s impossible without giving away spoilers. The story is thoughtful and meaningful, but I also find it somewhat sad. But in a more contemplative way, if that makes sense. I feel sad for the journey these two characters take. But is it necessary? Does it make the world better? And does the rest of the world even matter when it comes to their relationship?
“‘People overvalue intellect. Life should be lived from the heart.'”
Madeleine Henry, The Love Proof
Happily, the ending is satisfying, and I feel like this is a book that will stick with me for a few days. Well-written, with deep questions about perfect love between imperfect people, The Love Proof is for readers who contemplate the seriousness of love.

About the Author
A Song For A Book
On Bookstagram I created a hashtag for when I include a song that reminds me of the book I’m sharing, #ASongForABook, I thought I’d make it a regular feature on my reviews, too.
The Love Proof includes music within the story—and even a shared playlist of songs called “The Classics” between the two characters. Happily, the author has shared two Spotify playlists associated with the book (including “The Classics”) on her website. Oddly, her playlists don’t include two of the songs mentioned in the book, so I created my own playlist—which I’ve shared below! I’ll be highlighting “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me” by John Mayer, a song mentioned in the book that I think captures the tone of the story beautifully.
….Parts of me were made by you
And planets keep their distance too
The moon’s got a grip on the sea
And you’re gonna live forever in me
I guarantee, it’s your destiny
Life is full of sweet mistakes
And love’s an honest one to make
Time leaves no fruit on the tree
But you’re gonna live forever in me
I guarantee, it’s just meant to be….

This is a book that was not on my radar at all, but yours is the second review I read today both saying they enjoyed it and writing very interesting reviews. Of course, I will have to find someone to read it with me so I can discuss it with then. I am going to put this one on my wishlist. Great review Dedra.
Oh yay!! I would love to discuss it with you if you decide to read it! <3
Wow, I’d seen this cover and was mildly interested but after reading the synopsis and your review, my interest is piqued in a big way! This sounds like it’d be such a sad/heartbreaking read but I’m glad to hear that at least the ending was satisfying. I love stories that make me think of all the question you posed in your review! Up the TBR this goes ? Great review, Dedra!
I would love to exchange thoughts with you about this one! It did have me contemplating deep ideas about love. And anytime a book makes me think hard about things, I think it’s served its purpose. I hope you enjoy it if you get to pick it up! <3
It’s always nice when an author can make insta-love believable! Thanks for the review. 🙂
