Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me WANT to Read a Book

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Things That Make Me Instantly Want to Read a Book (these can be auto-buy authors, tropes you love, if an author you love blurbed it, settings, genres, etc.)

Hello Readers! I hope you’re well and reading some amazing books this week. Jana is making us really think for these last two weeks of the month. πŸ˜ƒ I’m throwing this week’s TTT together on very little brain power after a bad night of sleep. I really need to do better about having them done ahead of time. 😬

Let’s see what I put together!

(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)

1

Hype

I know some of you are turned off by hype for a book, but I’m usually a big sucker for it. For example, I totally fell for the hype of The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood.

2

Must-Read Author

Very similar to hype is a new release by a must-read author. If I know it’s an author I love, I want their newest release asap! I’m currently waiting on my copy of Happy Place by Emily Henry to arrive. I planned on purchasing it in the store, but when I learned it had been released in hardback unlike all her previous books, I found a UK paperback copy instead. Hardback is never my first choice.

3

Invitation to Read an ARC

On rare occasions, I’ll receive an invitation to read an ARC (advanced reader copy) of a book by an author I love before I even know advanced copies are available. Those are always fun days! I was thrilled when The Bodyguard by Katherine Center showed up eight months before it would be published.
My Review

4

A Great Cover

Sometimes all it takes is a great cover to have me searching out a book! I adored the cover of Luck & Last Resorts by Sarah Grunder Ruiz. Thankfully, I liked the book just as much.
My Review

5

Rave Reviews by YOU!

Nothing has me adding a book to my tbr more than seeing great reviews by all of YOU! Keep them coming! The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune was not my typical genre, but all of you convinced me to give it a try. And I loved it!

6

A Book Adaptation

Sometimes a trailer for a book adaptation will have me searching out the book. That’s what happened with Normal People by Sally Rooney. It’s still one of my favorite adaptations!

7

Set in a Vineyard

If I see a book is set in a vineyard, it’s usually a quick yes for me. There’s something comforting and romantic about the devotion it takes to succeed. Bend Toward the Sun by Jen Devon was one of my favorite books last year!
My Review

8

Enemies to Lovers

Boy, do I love a good enemies-to-lovers romance! The angst, the tension, the slow slide into acceptance. I adored The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, wishing I would have picked it up sooner.

9

Mixed Reviews

I’d seen some mixed reviews for this one, mostly because of the May-December romance, but I had more of an issue with the writing. I will admit that On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves was addictive, though!

10

Holiday Romance Set in a Bookstore

A cozy Christmas romance set in a bookstore?! Yes, please! I adored The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan set in Edinburgh.

  1. Im waiting for summer to read Luck & Last Resorts, i’m a seasonal reader and the cover screams summer, and yes, is so pretty

    1. Oooh, that will be perfect! I’m a seasonal reader when I can be. ARCs tend to having me reading them a season early sometimes. I’m planning on reading the previous book in that series—Love, Lists & Fancy Ships—this summer!

  2. Favorite authors are what I always tend to go back too. They’re kind of like “comfort reads.” I’m also a self proclaimed cover snob so I love a pretty cover. πŸ™‚

  3. Interesting list. I have to say that hype and adaptations are low on my list, but a great cover is definitely a draw. I am also eagerly awaiting new books from my favorite authors, and ARC invitations sometimes get me to take a look at a book that was not on my radar. Vineyards, huh? Did you read 800 Grapes? I liked that one.

  4. I didn’t know that Christmas holiday bookstore romances were a thing I liked until last year when I read THE MISTLETOE MOTIVE. But now I want to read more of them! And also, book covers are a big reason for me to pick up a book, too.

Though for me the hype is a mixed blessing. I want to read the hyped books (usually) but I also want to wait until the hype dies down. And then sometimes I forget about the book entirely…

    1. Yes! I adored The Mistletoe Motive, as well. Super cute.

Hype can definitely be a mixed blessing. I have learned that the hard way. If there is a lot of hype for a book I’m only marginally interested in, I will wait awhile and see if the reviews change. And then sometimes I forget about the book, too. πŸ˜ƒ

  5. Book bloggers are the WORST for making you had books to your TBR. I should really stop reading book blogs so that I can actually make progress on my TBR without adding tons more! LOL. Who am I kidding? I love book bloggers and all the great recommendations I get from them, especially the ones whose tastes align well with mine.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Haha! Yes! I have soooo many books on my physical and digital shelves. It’s an ongoing struggle, isn’t it?! But I agree, I have read some of my favorite books from fellow bloggers’ recommendations.

  6. Hype is definitely a love it or hate thing. I tend to run the other way from hyped books, having been let down too many times. Big yes to must-read authors! I think we all have those authors that we don’t even need to read a synopsis – we just know we’ll read whatever they release. πŸ™‚

    1. I do have a love/hate relationship with hype, but sometimes I just can’t resist the pull to know what all the fuss is about. πŸ˜ƒ And yes! I have found myself hitting request for an auto-read author without reading the synopsis. Thankfully, I don’t think I’ve regretted it yet. Ha!

  7. Covers definitely get me (and that one is great)! Vineyards can definitely be a great draw as well! I really liked Eight Hundred grapes…

  8. I’ll definitely immediately pick up new releases by my must read authors unless there’s something that seriously turns me off about a particular book (like Jodi Picoult’s book Wish You Were Here, I usually love her stuff and will buy everything she releases but I doubt I will ever be touching any books about the pandemic!). Hype is an interesting one for me because it depends on the book, if it’s a really hyped book in a genre I never read, the hype isn’t necessarily going to get me to read it, but if it’s a hyped book in a genre I usually like, yeah the hype might get to me. Hype definitely works both ways though and I’ve been burned by it as much as I’ve found gems. I’m always a sucker for a lovely cover, and I definitely take notice if lots of bloggers are raving about a book and it sounds like something I would like (it’s how I’ve found some of my favourite reads!).

    1. I was invited to read Wish You Were Here but I didn’t read it either. I think it was too soon. But I have read several other books set during the pandemic that I really enjoyed. Most recently, Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld. Hype definitely depends on the book or genre for me, as well. It’s usually just romances that I find harder to resist, unless it’s an author I know I have mixed feelings about, like Colleen Hoover. I rarely read her books when they’re new. I wait to get the general consensus. πŸ˜ƒ

      1. Yeah I think I understand where she was coming from in wanting to write it, but it was just released a bit too soon following everything for me to feel comfortable reading it, maybe someday. I’m glad you’ve found some pandemic set books that you’ve enjoyed, it’s still not for me yet (and since I hardly ever read contemporary fiction anyway, I don’t think it will be a problem I have). Yeah hype can definitely be very fickle. Oh that’s interesting, I’m not sure if I have an author like that? Maybe I do and just haven’t realised yet!
