Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020.

Hello Readers! How is it almost the end of January?? Is it just me, or is this month flying by? Here in the states (and I’m sure around the world) we were thrilled we made it through the presidential transition safely and relatively smoothly—and had a few laughs along the way. πŸ˜‰

Today we’re talking about authors we discovered in 2020. I had a great reading year last year, and I discovered so many new authors that I look forward to reading more from!

1

Emily Henry

If you’re a regular visitor to my blog, you’re probably sick of hearing me talk about Beach Read. It was my favorite read of 2020, and I’m anxious to read more from Henry.

My review

Also available: A Million Junes, The Love That Split the World (both of these are young adult)

Upcoming: People We Meet on Vacation May 2021

2

Lia Louis

Dear Emmie Blue was such a lovely surprise last year. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

My Review

Also available: Somewhere Close to Happy

Upcoming: Eight Perfect Hours October 2021

3

Sarah Morgenthaler

I read not one, but three books by this author last year! I’m in love with her Moose Springs series set in Alaska! It all starts with The Tourist Attraction.

My Review of The Tourist Attraction
My Review of Mistletoe and Mr. Right
My Review of Enjoy the View

Also available: Mistletoe and Mr. Right, Enjoy the View

4

Elizabeth Acevedo

I read With the Fire on High last summer after hearing so many rave reviews. Acevedo created a character that leapt off the page in Emoni, and her other books are now at the top of my TBR.

Also available: The Poet X, Clap When You Land

5

Leigh Bardugo

I finally dove into the Grishaverse in 2020! It may have been one of my biggest accomplishments. πŸ˜‰ I would love to reread the Six of Crows Duology and pick up King of Scars, as well.

My Random Thoughts While Binge-Reading the Six of Crows Duology

Also available: The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, Ninth House, King of Scars Duology

6

Adrienne Young

I impulsively picked up Fable last year and I couldn’t put it down! Now I’m eager to read the sequel, as well as Young’s other books.

My Review

Also available: Sky in the Deep, The Girl the Sea Gave Back

Upcoming: Namesake (Fable, #2) March 2021

7

Jenna Evans Welch

I read Love & Gelato (set in Italy) and Love & Luck (set in Ireland) back to back last summer, and they were so much fun! I’m anxious to pick up the newest one (set in Greece)!

Also available: Love & Olives

8

Helen Hoang

The Kiss Quotient was my first five-star read of 2020, and then I read The Bride Test a few months later. I’m happy I finally gave in to the hype!

Upcoming: The Heart Principle August 2021

9

Talia Hibbert

Another book I caved to the hype on was Get a Life, Chloe Brown. It was ultra steamy, and I loved Hibbert’s characters. Hibbert is a prolific romance writer!

Also available: Take a Hint, Dani Brown

Upcoming: Act Your Age, Eve Brown March 2021

10

Sally Rooney

Hearing the buzz for Hulu’s adaption of Normal People, I picked up the book to read first. But it’s one I really wish I would have read after I watched the series because I think it would have enhanced my reading experience. I enjoyed Rooney’s writing style and look forward to reading more by her.

My Review

Also available: Conversations With Friends (also being adapted by Hulu), Two Stories

Upcoming: Beautiful World, Where Are You September 2021

  1. *STILL* want to read Sarah’s ‘Tourist’ books, and while I also read a Jenna Evans Welch book this year, I read her latest release. Now I just need to go back and read her other two (which I do own). Glad you found some good reads in 2020!! πŸ™‚

    1. I’ve only read the Shadow and Bone series and the Six of Crows Duology so far. So 5 books for me, but yes, it was a commitment! I was anxious to join the hype for Six of Crows, and I wanted to read the books before the adaptation came out this year. πŸ™‚ I still need to pick up The King of Scars series, though.

I never understood why people said you could skip the Shadow and Bone series and go right to Six of Crows, but you really can, if that makes you more willing to pick it up. πŸ˜‰

    1. Oh no! It’s so hard for me to fathom that since it was my favorite read of the year, but if we all liked the same thing, life would be boring, right?? πŸ˜‰ Happy reading!

  2. LOL that Bernie meme. I LOVE IT! ?
Great post, Dedra! So many great authors and definitely some of my favourites on here. ? Hibbert also made my list today but Young and Morgenthaler were new-to-me too and I loved their books! Henry is gonna be on my 2021 list since I somehow didn’t get around to Beach Read in 2020 but it’s happening this year–I’m determined! ?

    1. Haha! That’s how I feel about finally reading Madeline Miller and Daisy Jones. I’m determined to make it happen this year! πŸ˜‰ You know I can’t wait to hear what you think of Beach Read!

  3. Haha! The Bernie meme’s are all over the internet. XD That one is great! *lol*
You read so many authors I’m curious about! I hope I’ll get to Talia Hibbert’s books soon. Great choices!

  4. Hi Dedra! First of all, I love how you presented your post. Gorgeous!!

So many books/authors on your list I still want to explore. Beach Read, Dear Emmie Blue….

Oh I can go on forever about Leigh Bardugo! Love her work!! Would love to read Fable by Adrienne Young.

    Happy TTT!

    Elza Reads

    1. Thank you Mareli! If you like Barudgo, I bet you’d enjoy Fable. I’m anxious to read more from Bardugo. I still need to pick up King of Scars and Ninth House.

      Happy reading!

    1. Yes!! Thank goodness for Bernie and his mittens. Ha!

I really gravitated to the romance even more than normal last year. And thanks to ARCs, all five books I’ve read so far this year have been new authors. πŸ™‚

  5. This post is so cute!!!! I read Hello Girls, which Emily Henry co-authored a few years ago. I put Talia on my list this week as well. I started Shadow & Bone in 2019, but I basically bing read Grisha Verse last year as well, and Leigh is such a talented author.

    1. Thank you!! Oh, yay! So you enjoyed Hello Girls? I’m excited to read more from Henry. And I’m soooo happy I finally caved and read Bardugo. No regrets! I’m excited for the adaptation!

  6. I haven’t read any of these, but multiple books of Lia Louis’ sound interesting — I’ll have to check her out.

  7. I have read a few of these authors and loved them, but not in 2020. I should have added Lia Louis to my list though. I do hope to read Sally Rooney and Adrienne Young soon. Great list Dedra!
