Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2022

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is New-to-Me Authors I Discovered in 2022. (If you didn’t read books by 10 new authors, share new-to-you authors whose books you added to your TBR in 2022. Get creative, if needed!)

Hello Readers! I hope the new year is treating you well. Personally, I love January. It always seems to be a slower month for me after the busyness of the previous two months. I was ridiculously excited to discover I still had another week left in the month while working on today’s TTT. πŸ˜‚ I’ve finally been catching up on blogging and reading. It felt like it would never happen. I’d started the year already behind on my ARCs, but I’m caught up! For the moment, at least. Now I’m reading ahead, which is always a nice feeling. 😍

Today we’re talking about new-to-us authors we discovered in 2022, and I’ve decided that means I’ll be sharing only authors who’ve published more than one book. No debut authors here! It might be their debut book I read, but they’ve since published something else.

Let’s see who I discovered (in no particular order)!

1

Elle Kennedy

Elle Kennedy had been on my romance-loving radar for awhile, so when I was invited to read her first book in the new Avalon Bay series, I thought it would be a good way to give the author a try. It worked! Good Girl Complex had me hooked! I also read and enjoyed the follow-up Bad Girl Reputation. Now I just need to read some of her backlist books, too.

Also available: Kennedy appears to have 11 other series! That’s a lot of catching up to do. πŸ˜… I do have the first book in the Off-Campus series, The Deal on my kindle, which seems to be one of her most popular.

Upcoming: The third book in the Avalon Bay series The Summer Girl will be released in July, and I’m happy to have snagged an ARC!

2

Alice Oseman

I finally read the first two books in the Heartstoppper graphic novel series last year, and I was quickly a fan. Love the art, love the story, love the representation. Charlie and Nick are simply precious. I just need to pick up the rest of the books!

Also available: Radio Silence; I Was Born for This; and Loveless, which I own and hope to read soon!

Upcoming: Heartstopper: Volume 5

3

Meghan Quinn

Another romance author that’s been on my radar is Meghan Quinn. I finally picked up a few of her books while I had a trial subscription to Kindle Unlimited last year. I started with The Highland Fling, then picked up The One Night, followed by The Reunion.

Also available: Quinn appears to have 18 other series and some stand-alone novels, as well. On my radar: The Mother Road; That Second Chance; and Runaway Groomsman.

Upcoming: Royally in Trouble (Royal, #2)

4

Sonali Dev

When I was invited to read The Wedding Setup, a short story by Sonali Dev, I thought it would be a good way to finally give the author a try. I loved the story so much, I had every intention of reading more by the author right away, but couldn’t make it happen. Hopefully in 2023!

My review of The Wedding Setup

Also available: The Rajes Series (retellings of Jane Austen’s novels—I have the first one, Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors waiting on my Kindle) and the Bollywood Series.

Recent release: The Vibrant Years, which is waiting on my Kindle, as well.

5

Sarah Grunder Ruiz

When I was invited to read Luck & Last Resorts, I couldn’t resist the cover, even though I knew it was the second book in a series. Happily, each book can be read as a stand alone, too. But now I’m eager to read its predecessor Love, Lists, and Fancy Ships.

My Review of Luck and Last Resorts

Upcoming: Last Call at the Local
expected July 23, 2023

6

Sally Thorne

I’d had Thorne’s debut novel The Hating Game waiting on my shelf for awhile and I finally picked it up on a whim, which I don’t do often. I ADORED it, kicking myself for not reading it sooner. Now I’m eager for more—although, her other books have not received as high of ratings as her debut.

Also available: 99 Percent; Second First Impressions

Recent release: Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match

7

Jesmyn Ward

I’ve also had Sing, Unburied, Sing waiting on my shelf, and I was thrilled to finally pick up this beautifully devastating novel. I was also invited to read her recent short story release Mother Swamp, cementing this author as one I need to read more from.

My review of Mother Swamp

Also available: Where the Line Bleeds; Salvage the Bones; Men We Reaped; Navigate Your Stars

8

Ali Hazelwood

I was a little late to the party, but I finally got my hands on The Love Hypothesis last year, and I was happy that it lived up to the hype!

Also available: Love on the Brain (which is waiting on my shelf!); Loath to You

Upcoming: Love, Theoretically expected June 13, 2023; Check & Mate expected November 1, 2023

9

Chloe Liese

I’ve been longing to read the Bergman Brothers Series since I first saw all of you raving about it, and I finally read the first two in the series last year! As well as a holiday romance by Liese, The Mistletoe Motive.

Also available: Tough Love Series; Two Wrongs Make a Right

Upcoming: Better Hate than Never expected September 5, 2023

10

Mariana Zapata

The new-to-me author I read the most books from last year was the queen of the slow-burn, Mariana Zapata. I started with From Lukov With Love—which still remains my favorite—then picked up Kulti, All Rhodes Lead Here, and The Wall of Winnipeg and Me.

Also available: Wait for It; The Best Thing; Hands Down and several others.

Recent release: When Gracie Met the Grump

Who is the favorite author you discovered in 2022? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Wandering!

  1. I think the Off Campus books were my intro to Kennedy, though she had other series. I love sports romances. Quinn is a favorite too. I know everyone raves about The Hating Game (which I liked), but I liked Thorne’s Second First Impressions the most.

    1. I didn’t know I liked sports romances until I read Zapata. Now I’m anxious to pick up Kennedy’s, too. I’m happy I was finally able to give Quinn a try, and relieved she lived up to the hype for me. Oh, that gives me hope for Second First Impressions since we have similar tastes. I’ve heard mixed reviews.

  2. Great list, Dedra! Sonali Dev was new to me as well and her book was a great way to kick off 2022. I’m still hoping to read more of her books (hopefully soon, lol). Liese and Quinn are both long-time faves and I’m so happy to see you enjoyed their books! 😍

    1. I felt even better about my reading year after compiling this list. It had felt like my year was heavy on ARCs, but I did discover all these wonderful backlist authors. 😍

  3. So many wonderful authors on this list. I have Elle Kennedy and Sarah Grunder Ruiz on my list today too!

  4. Nice list, Dedra. I have read 5 of these authors, so that means 5 more to check out. I hope my TBR shelf doesn’t grow too much today.

  5. See I hate January precisely because it’s so slow, it seems to take about three months of the year just to get through it! Also it’s really cold here in January but without the fun of Christmas! I’ve only read Alice Oseman of these authors and I only read Radio Silence, I didn’t read any of her other books because I wasn’t that fussed by Radio Silence and contemporary YA and I rarely gel.

    1. Haha! I’d take several more months like January. But I’m in Texas and it’s been unseasonably warm here, so I’m sure that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip about Radio Silence. I adored Heartstoppers. I don’t read many graphic novels, but I thought it was very well done.

      1. Yeah, it’s been freezing cold here in the UK so that does make it feel even more dreary. February is at least slightly better because it’s shorter (even if it’s just as cold!). A lot of people do love Radio Silence, I think I just personally missed the age where I could really relate to it, I was almost 22 when I read it, and heading into my final year of Uni, so the whole sixth form/uni applications stuff didn’t relate as much as it might have several years previously.

    1. Yes! I want more laid back months like January. Happy birthday month! Mine is in February, but I kinda always dread my birthday. πŸ˜† Which is also probably another reason why I like that January feels so long. Ha! Hopefully I can catch up on Ali Hazelwood’s books soon!

  6. Yay for being caught up in January! The only author I’ve read on the list here is Alice Oseman, which I also “discovered” in 2022, but the book I read was Loveless.

      1. My apologies for the late reply! I neither loved nor hated Loveless. The writing was nice, but I had a bit of an issue with most of the characters and their personalities, especially the MC, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

    1. I was pleasantly surprised by Hazelwood. I was a little nervous it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but The Love Hypothesis did for me. I’ll be interested to see if her other books do, as well.
