TBR Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Adult Books That Include Animal Rescues

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Animals From Books! (these could be mythical, real, main characters, sidekicks, companions/pets, shifters, etc.) (Submitted by Paige @paigesquared and Jennifer Y. @ Never Too Many to Read)

Hello Readers! How are we already at the end of April??!! I hope you’re all well and safe. I’ve only read four books so far this month but I’m okay with it. It’s been nice to read slowly and take a bit of a break after participating in my readathon last month. I’m still ahead on my ARCs so I’ve just been reading leisurely. 🙂

When I saw today’s topic, it made me think about the last few books I’ve read that had unexpected animal adoption scenes. Which made me wonder how many other books there might be that have pet rescue or adoption scenes. It took a little bit of searching (thank goodness for Goodreads lists!) but I’ll be sharing five books I’ve read (avoiding spoilers) and five books on my TBR that have some form of animal rescues—or so I’ve heard. Let’s see what I found!

1

Float Plan by Trish Doller

Synopsis:

Critically acclaimed author Trish Doller’s unforgettable and romantic adult debut about setting sail, starting over, and finding yourself…

Since the loss of her fiancé, Anna has been shipwrecked by grief—until a reminder goes off about a trip they were supposed to take together. Impulsively, Anna goes to sea in their sailboat, intending to complete the voyage alone.

But after a treacherous night’s sail, she realizes she can’t do it by herself and hires Keane, a professional sailor, to help. Much like Anna, Keane is struggling with a very different future than the one he had planned. As romance rises with the tide, they discover that it’s never too late to chart a new course.

In Trish Doller’s unforgettable Float Plan, starting over doesn’t mean letting go of your past, it means making room for your future.

Goodreads
My Review

This is one of the more recent books I’ve read where I was pleasantly surprised to come across an animal rescue scene—and, no, it didn’t involve sea life. 😉

2

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Synopsis:

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

• Enjoy a drunken night out.
• Ride a motorcycle.
• Go camping.
• Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
• Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
• And… do something bad.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

Goodreads

It’s not too surprising that this book contains an animal rescue since there’s a cat on the cover, but the scene that involves said rescue is probably the best scene in the book!

3

Happy Singles Day by Ann Marie Walker

Synopsis:

Single and proud of it! Oh, oops…

As a Certified Professional Organizer, everything in Paige Parker’s world is as it should be. Perfect apartment, perfect office, perfect life. And now, the perfect vacation planned to honor Singles Day. After all, what’s better than celebrating her pride in being single? Because who needs a man anyway? They have zero taste in quality television, leave the toilet seat up, and sleep with your best friend. No thanks. Her life is fine just the way it is.

As the owner of a now-dormant bed & breakfast, Lucas Croft’s life is simple and quiet. It’s only him and his five-year-old daughter, which is just the way he likes it. Because who needs a woman anyway? They nag you to clean up your stuff, want the toilet seat put down, and expect the dishes to be done the same day the meal is cooked. No thanks. His life is fine just the way it is.

But when Paige books a room that Lucas’ well-intentioned sister listed without his knowledge, their two worlds collide. If they can survive the week together, they just might discover exactly what they’ve both been missing.

Goodreads
My Review

Another one that probably isn’t too surprising, but there is a very adorable animal rescue scene in Happy Singles Day, as well.

4

What You Wish For by Katherine Center

Synopsis:

Samantha Casey is a school librarian who loves her job, the kids, and her school family with passion and joy for living. But she wasn’t always that way.

Duncan Carpenter is the new school principal who lives by rules and regulations, guided by the knowledge that bad things can happen. But he wasn’t always that way.

And Sam knows it. Because she knew him before—at another school, in a different life. Back then, she loved him—but she was invisible. To him. To everyone. Even to herself. She escaped to a new school, a new job, a new chance at living. But when Duncan, of all people, gets hired as the new principal there, it feels like the best thing that could possibly happen to the school—and the worst thing that could possibly happen to Sam. Until the opposite turns out to be true. The lovable Duncan she’d known is now a suit-and-tie wearing, rule-enforcing tough guy so hell-bent on protecting the school that he’s willing to destroy it.

As the school community spirals into chaos, and danger from all corners looms large, Sam and Duncan must find their way to who they really are, what it means to be brave, and how to take a chance on love—which is the riskiest move of all.

With Katherine Center’s sparkling dialogue, unforgettable characters, heart, hope, and humanity, What You Wish For is the author at her most compelling best.

Goodreads
My Review

A very sweet animal rescue scene in this uplifting novel by one of my favorite authors.

5

Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Sarah Morgenthaler

Synopsis:

How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.

Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can’t stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana’s determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town’s hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.

And really…how hard could it be?

The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it’s not getting any easier now that his dream girl’s back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it’s clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It’s an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.

Goodreads
My Review

Each of the books in the Moose Springs, Alaska series features adorable animals, but this is the second in the series and features several rescued animals. Morgenthaler has a talent for writing scenes with animals, and I highly recommend all three of her books in this series. Each one can be read as a stand-alone, as well.

6

Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover

Synopsis:

Life and a dismal last name are the only two things Beyah Grim’s parents ever gave her. After carving her path all on her own, Beyah is well on her way to bigger and better things, thanks to no one but herself.

With only two short months separating her from the future she’s built and the past she desperately wants to leave behind, an unexpected death leaves Beyah with no place to go during the interim. Forced to reach out to her last resort, Beyah has to spend the remainder of her summer on a peninsula in Texas with a father she barely knows. Beyah’s plan is to keep her head down and let the summer slip by seamlessly, but her new neighbor Samson throws a wrench in that plan.

Samson and Beyah have nothing in common on the surface.

She comes from a life of poverty and neglect; he comes from a family of wealth and privilege. But one thing they do have in common is that they’re both drawn to sad things. Which means they’re drawn to each other. With an almost immediate connection too intense for them to continue denying, Beyah and Samson agree to stay in the shallow end of a summer fling. What Beyah doesn’t realize is that a rip current is coming, and it’s about to drag her heart out to sea.

Goodreads

This is one of the many Colleen Hoover books on my TBR and I found it on a list of books featuring animal rescues on Goodreads. Nothing in the synopsis gives it away, but I’ve seen a few reviews mention a dog??

7

The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez

Synopsis:

Two years after losing her fiancé, Sloan Monroe still can’t seem to get her life back on track. But one trouble-making pup with a “take me home” look in his eyes is about to change everything. With her new pet by her side, Sloan finally starts to feel more like herself. Then, after weeks of unanswered texts, Tucker’s owner reaches out. He’s a musician on tour in Australia. And bottom line: He wants Tucker back.

Well, Sloan’s not about to give up her dog without a fight. As their flirty texts turn into long calls, Sloan can’t deny a connection. There’s no telling what could happen when they meet in person. The question is: With his music career on the rise, how long will Jason really stick around? And is it possible for Sloan to survive another heartbreak?

Goodreads

It sounds like an animal rescue is the main plot point for this rom-com on my TBR that came out last year.

8

After I Do by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Synopsis:

When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

Goodreads

You know those books that you read the synopsis and you think, “Gah, I wanna read it right now!” This is one of those books for me, but the book continues to sit on my shelf unread. While there are no clues about an animal rescue in the synopsis, after some searching, I’m confident the book contains one.

9

Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center

Synopsis:

A year after getting divorced, Helen Carpenter, thirty-two, lets her annoying, ten years younger brother talk her into signing up for a wilderness survival course. It’s supposed to be a chance for her to pull herself together again, but when she discovers that her brother’s even-more-annoying best friend is also coming on the trip, she can’t imagine how it will be anything other than a disaster. Thus begins the strangest adventure of Helen’s well-behaved life: three weeks in the remotest wilderness of a mountain range in Wyoming where she will survive mosquito infestations, a surprise summer blizzard, and a group of sorority girls.

Yet, despite everything, the vast wilderness has a way of making Helen’s own little life seem bigger, too. And, somehow the people who annoy her the most start teaching her the very things she needs to learn. Like how to stand up for herself. And how being scared can make you brave. And how sometimes you just have to get really, really lost before you can even have a hope of being found.

Goodreads

Ughhh, another one where I read the synopsis and want to pick it up immediately. Problem is, I don’t own this one yet. So no clues about an animal rescue… but they are in the wilderness??

10

Watchers by Dean Koontz

Synopsis:

From a top-secret government laboratory come two genetically altered life-forms. One is a magnificent dog of astonishing intelligence. The other, a hybrid monster of a brutally violent nature. And both are on the loose…Best selling author Dean Koontz presents his most terrifying, dramatic and moving novel: the explosive story of a man and a woman, caught in the relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation…throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.

Goodreads

Okay, so I’m not sure if the dog is being rescued or doing the rescuing, but as a long-time fan of Koontz, I feel like it’s required that I read one of his biggest hits someday.

Bonus

Synopsis:

The playful, epic adventure of a 160-pound English Mastiff and the twentysomething girl who grew up alongside her—Marley & Me for a whole new generation.

Lauren Watt took her 160-pound English Mastiff to college—so of course after graduation, Gizelle followed Lauren to her first, tiny apartment in New York. Because Gizelle wasn’t just a dog; she was a roommate, sister, confidante, dining companion, and everything in between.

Together, Gizelle and Lauren went through boyfriends, first jobs, a mother’s struggle with addiction, and the ups and downs of becoming an adult in the big city. But when Gizelle got sick and Lauren realized her best friend might not be such a constant after all, she designed an epic bucket list to make the absolute most of the time they had left.

Bursting with charm, this unique, coming-of-age story of a girl making her way through life is a testament to the special way pets inspire us to live better, love better, and appreciate the simple pleasures. Gizelle’s Bucket List is the humorous, poignant lesson our pets teach us: to embrace adventure, love unconditionally, and grow into the people we want to be.

Goodreads

If you’d rather read a non-fiction about an animal adoption, this memoir had me in tears. And I don’t even really like dogs. 😉

  1. Hi Dedra! Love your twist on this one! Clever clever.

Watchers has been on my TBR for ages. Need to read it! I’ve only read a couple of Dean Koontz books, but this is one I still want to read.

  2. I like your spin on this week’s top ten. I loved all of Sara Morgenthaler’s Moose Spring’s books, she does write great animal characters.

  3. I haven’t read any of these, but I love your idea! I always love to see animals in books, and as someone who used to volunteer at a humane society, I also love to see rescue or adoption scenes!
