My December 2022 TBR

Hello Readers! How is it already the final month of 2022??!! Didn’t we just start this year? Like it or not, here we are. The first of December is always fun for me because I participate in the Popsugar Reading Challenge, and the list for 2023 was just released yesterday. Now I get to “plan” what I’ll be reading for next year. πŸ˜ƒ

This month I’ll mostly be reading seasonal reads. It’s the one month I take off from my reading challenges and do more mood reading. But I do have one ARC to finish. (It’s one I’ve been anticipating all year!) And an ARC that won’t publish until summer 2023, BUT it’s by one of my favorite authors.

Let’s take a look at what I’m optimistically hoping to read this month!

The Key to My Heart by Lia Louis

I’ll be starting the month off finishing up The Key to My Heart by Lia Louis. I’m loving this one, but I had no doubt that I would. Louis is one of my must-read authors!

Synopsis:

A heartwarming novel about hope after loss as a young widow receives mysterious messages of love from the β€œmust-buy author” (Jodi Picoult) of Eight Perfect Hours.

Sparkly and charming Natalie Fincher has it allβ€”a handsome new husband, a fixer-upper cottage of her dreams, and the opportunity to tour with the musical she’s spent years writing. But when her husband suddenly dies, all her hopes and dreams instantly disappear.

Two and a half years later, Natalie is still lost. She works, sleeps (well, as much as the sexually frustrated village foxes will allow), and sees friends just often enough to allay their worries, but her life is empty. And she can only bring herself to play music at a London train station’s public piano where she can be anonymous. She’s lost motivation, faith in love, in happiness…in everything.

But when someone begins to mysteriously leave the sheet music for her husband’s favorite songs at the station’s piano, Natalie begins to feel a sense of hope and excitement for the first time. As she investigates just who could be doing this, Natalie finds herself on an unexpected journey toward newfound love for herself, for life, and maybe, for a special someone.

Hello Stranger by Katherine Center

Just like this time last year when I was surprised with an invitation to read The Bodyguard by Katherine Center six months before it would be published, I was thrilled to find an invitation for Center’s next novel, Hello Stranger. The Bodyguard became my favorite read of the year last year. Will lightning strike twice??

Synopsis:

Sadie Montogmery has had good breaks and bad breaks in her life, but as a struggling artist, all she needs is one lucky break. Things seem to be going her way when she lands one of the coveted finalist spots in a portrait competition. It happens to coincide with a surgery she needs to have. Minor, they say. Less than a week in the hospital they say. Nothing about you will change, they say. Upon recovery, it begins to dawn on Sadie that she can see everything around her, but she can no longer see faces.

Temporary, they say. Lots of people deal with this, they say. As she struggles to cope―and hang onto her artistic dreams―she finds solace in her fourteen-year-old dog, Peanut. Thankfully, she can still see animal faces. When Peanut gets sick, she rushes him to the emergency vet nearby. That’s when she meets veterinarian Dr. Addison. And she’s pleasantly surprised when he asks her on a date. But she doesn’t want anyone to know about her face blindness. Least of all Joe, her obnoxious neighbor who always wears a bowling jacket and seems to know everyone in the building. He’s always there at the most embarrassing but convenient times, and soon, they develop a sort of friendship. But could it be something more?

As Sadie tries to save her career, confront her haunting past, and handle falling in love with two different guys she realizes that happiness can be found in the places―and people― you least expect.

The Mistletoe Motive by Chloe Liese

I finally managed to read two books in The Bergman Brothers series that so many of you have raved about, and now I’m a Chloe Liese fan. I snatched up this holiday ebook when I saw it discounted on Kobo.

Synopsis:

From the author of THE BERGMAN BROTHERS series comes a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers holiday romance, perfect for fans of THE HATING GAME and YOU’VE GOT MAIL.

He loathes the holidays. She loves them. She’s full of festive cheer. He’s brimming with Bah, Humbugs. Besides unreasonably seasonable names, the only thing Jonathan Frost and Gabriella Di Natale have in common is a healthy dose of mutual contempt. Well, that and the same place of employment at the city’s most beloved independent bookstore, Bailey’s Bookshop. But when the store’s owners confess its dire financial state, Jonathan and Gabby discover another unfortunate commonality: the imminent threat of unemployment.

With the Baileys’ requests to minimize expenses, win new customers, and make record sales dancing in their heads, Jonathan and Gabby concludeβ€”barring a financial Christmas miracleβ€”one of them will soon be cut from the payroll. Neither are willing to step down from their position, so they strike a bargain: whoever has more sales in December gets to stay on in the new year; the loser will resign. With a lifetime’s worth of festive tricks up her sleeve, Gabby should easily outsell her nemesis, except the unreadable Mr. Frost’s every move seems purely designed to throw her off her game.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Gabby’s deceptive ex won’t quit pursuing her, and her anonymous online friend suggests they take a break. Worst of all, as the pressure mounts to save the bookshop and her job, Gabby meets a new, tender side of Jonathan. Is this the same man she’s called her cold-hearted enemy?

Maybe he’s got a motive she just can’t figure outβ€”or maybe Jonathan Frost isn’t as chilly as she once thought. Maybe Jonathan and Gabby already knowβ€”and loveβ€”each other in ways they never thought possible.

This is an #OwnVoices story for its portrayal of autism by an autistic author.

Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh

I’d recently seen several of my fellow bloggers raving about this holiday romance, so I couldn’t resist when I saw it on sale, as well.

Synopsis:

She’s meant to be catching flights, not catching feelings…

Molly and Andrew are just trying to get home to Ireland for the holidays, when a freak snowstorm grounds their flight.

Nothing romantic has ever happened between them: they’re friends and that’s all. But once a year, for the last ten years, Molly has spent seven hours and fifteen minutes sitting next to Andrew on the last flight before Christmas from Chicago to Dublin, drinking terrible airplane wine and catching up on each other’s lives. In spite of all the ways the two friends are different, it’s the holiday tradition neither of them has ever wanted to give up.

Molly isn’t that bothered by Christmas, butβ€”in yet another way they’re total oppositesβ€”Andrew is a full-on fanatic for the festive season and she knows how much getting back to Ireland means to him. So, instead of doing the sane thing and just celebrating the holidays together in America, she does the stupid thing. The irrational thing. She vows to get him home. And in time for his mam’s famous Christmas dinner.

The clock is ticking. But Molly always has a plan. Andβ€”as long as the highly-specific combination of taxis, planes, boats, and trains all run on timeβ€”it can’t possibly go wrong.

What she doesn’t know is that, as the snow falls over the city and over the heads of two friends who are sure they’re not meant to be together, the universe might just have a plan of its own…

A totally gorgeous and escapist friends-to-lovers festive romance with a swoon-worthy hero. Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Mhairi Macfarlane, and Christina Lauren.

Mind the Gap, Dash & Lily (Dash & Lily, #3) by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan

This was one of the books gifted to me by a fellow blogger from my wishlist last year (Thank you!), and I’ve been saving it for the holiday season. I was a fan of the first two books set in New York (as well as the Netflix adaptation), and I’m excited to check in on Dash and Lily!

Synopsis:

For Dash and Lily, it’s beginning to look a lot like…distance! Just in time for the series release of Dash & Lily on Netflix comes a new helping of love–this time across the pond as best-selling authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan send Dash and Lily to England.

Dash and Lily were feeling closer than ever…it’s just too bad they’re now an ocean apart. After Dash gets accepted to Oxford University and Lily stays in New York to take care of her dogwalking business, the devoted couple are struggling to make a long distance relationship work. And when Dash breaks the news that he won’t be coming home for Christmas, Lily makes a decision: if Dash can’t come to her, she’ll join him in London. It’s a perfect romantic gesture…that spins out of Lily’s control. Soon Dash and Lily are feeling more of a gap between them, even though they’re in the same city. Will London bring them together again–or will it be their undoing?

Holidate by Monica Murphy

I have a thing for books or stories about Christmas tree farms, so I couldn’t resist grabbing this one when it was available for free last December.

Synopsis:

Candice Gaines loves Christmas. Not only does she bask in the twinkling lights, sing Christmas carols and go crazy with the decorations, she’s also in the giving spirit, donating much of her time and wealth to various charities in the local area.

Charlie Sullivan despises Christmas. Though it keeps his family afloat, considering they own Sullivan Family Christmas Tree Farm, the main provider for Christmas trees on the Monterey peninsula. He’d much rather work among the trees versus have to deal with people.

But Charlie’s parents are taking on more philanthropic projectsβ€”and as their oldest child, they want him to be their official public representative. He just has to play nice and convince everyone he’s not a total holiday hater.

When Charlie’s mom asks Candice to accompany him to a variety of holiday parties and events, she reluctantly agrees. She thinks Charlie is a big ol’ Grinch, but is determined to change his mindset and help him spread Christmas cheer. Charlie finds Candice too chatty, too sweet, too much. Do people like her really exist?

Why yes, yes they do. The more time they spend togetherβ€”along with a few kisses under the mistletoeβ€”the more they start to like each other. Hopefully Charlie can convince Candice he doesn’t have a heart that’s two sizes too small before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

My new annual tradition is reading this charming book. I’ve read it in December the past two years. I’m always surprised more people don’t love this one, but it just checks all my feel-good-holiday-book boxes. Hopefully I can get to it again this year!

Synopsis:

One Christmas wish, two brothers, and a lifetime of hope are on the line for hapless Maelyn Jones in In a Holidaze, the quintessential holiday romantic novel by Christina Lauren, the New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners..

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the worldβ€”the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loopβ€”and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Jam-packed with yuletide cheer, an unforgettable cast of characters, and Christina Lauren’s trademark hijinks, this swoon-worthy romantic read will make you believe in the power of wishes and the magic of the holidays.

  1. These all look like such fun books… especially the new Katherine Center! I’m envious you get to read that one this month. I loved The Bodyguard! That new Chloe Liese is also high on my priority list. Happy reading! πŸ˜€

  2. I read three of these – all great! I actually thought they did a good job growing Dash and Lily’s relationship. Mind the Gap was a lot less of a downer than the second Dash and Lily book too. Hope these are all winners for you

    1. Oh, that’s good to hear about Mind the Gap. So far I’ve only had time to read Mistletoe Motive, but hopefully I’ll get to Mind the Gap, too. My dreams of relaxing seasonal reading rarely happen. πŸ˜ƒ

  3. Lots of great holiday reads here, Dedra. I have read some of them, but not all. I have no idea what I will read in December, but I do want to read The Key to my Heart for sure. Enjoy all these wonderful books. I saw the original Netflix Dash and Lily series and didn’t realize there was another coming out. I should try to read the book first, this time.

    1. I hope you enjoy The Key to my Heart as much as I did! I don’t think there’s another Dash and Lily coming to Netflix. I think I read that they cancelled it, which was disappointing. I thought it was done really well. Thank goodness their story can continue in their books! πŸ˜ƒ

      1. I really enjoyed Dash and Lily and would have watched more, too bad. I am sure I will love The Key to my Heart, I loved her previous two books.

    1. I’m really hoping I can keep up my tradition of rereading In a Holidaze, but I’m struggling to find time to read right now. Might have to save it for after Christmas. πŸ˜‰
