Synopsis:
James and Cordelia must save Londonβand their marriageβin this thrilling and highly anticipated conclusion to the Last Hours series from the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Thorns is a Shadowhunters novel.
Cordelia Carstairs has lost everything that matters to her. In only a few short weeks, she has seen her father murdered, her plans to become parabatai with her best friend, Lucie, destroyed, and her marriage to James Herondale crumble before her eyes. Even worse, she is now bound to an ancient demon, Lilith, stripping her of her power as a Shadowhunter.
After fleeing to Paris with Matthew Fairchild, Cordelia hopes to forget her sorrows in the cityβs glittering nightlife. But reality intrudes when shocking news comes from home: Tatiana Blackthorn has escaped the Adamant Citadel, and London is under new threat by the Prince of Hell, Belial.
Cordelia returns to a London riven by chaos and dissent. The long-kept secret that Belial is James and Lucieβs grandfather has been revealed by an unexpected enemy, and the Herondales find themselves under suspicion of dealings with demons. Cordelia longs to protect James but is torn between a love for James she has long believed hopeless, and the possibility of a new life with Matthew. Nor can her friends helpβripped apart by their own secrets, they seem destined to face what is coming alone.
For time is short, and Belialβs plan is about to crash into the Shadowhunters of London like a deadly wave, one that will separate Cordelia, Lucie, and the Merry Thieves from help of any kind. Left alone in a shadowy London, they must face Belialβs deadly army. If Cordelia and her friends are going to save their cityβand their familiesβthey will have to muster their courage, swallow their pride, and trust one another again. For if they fail, they may lose everythingβeven their souls.

My thoughts
(Spoiler free)
It’s hard to objectively review books from a beloved, long-established book series. I’ve been a Shadowhunter fan from the first book, despite its lack of stellar writing. The storytelling and world-building is what drew me in. But with each book, Clare became a more confident and capable writer. For me, she hit her peak with The Infernal Devices, her second series in the Shadowhunter universe. While I’ve enjoyed subsequent ones, nothing has captured me in quite the same way as Will, Tessa, and Jem.
I was thrilled when she revisited them—or more accurately, their children—in The Last Hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books, although they still never reached The Infernal Devices status. Cordelia, James, and friends were worthy subjects. I’m always impressed with how well Clare can create unique characters. Especially when she has so many already established in this world.
It’s not her characters that I have issues with, it’s the story or path those characters take that goes astray in Chain of Thorns.
But, I kept reading, totally committed to my beloved characters, but some of their choices and actions no longer seemed consistent with their well-established characters in the previous two books. I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, so I won’t name names, but there’s a love triangle that just didn’t work for me. And I’m a rare romance reader who doesn’t mind a good love triangle. But this one didn’t have enough backstory to support it, in my opinion.
“The thing about falling is you don’t have any control on your way down.”

It’s always pretty much a guarantee that someone will die in one of Clare’s books. Could be a minor character or a main character, but someone will be sacrificed. When I ended book two, I was convinced I knew which character wouldn’t survive the series. And I was distraught about it. It was a character I’d grown to love. Well, I was wrong, but I wasn’t very happy about it. The character I’d loved so much in book two became rather bland in book three. Which was very disappointing. I think it would have made them more interesting and memorable if they had died.
I feel like Clare just rushed through this one, even though it took an extra year to be released since the previous book. That’s a two year wait! Or maybe she’s finally run out of ideas in the Shadowhunter universe?!
“Hope wore out the soul, more than any other feeling.”

But it wasn’t all bad. I adored the side characters: Anna and Ari, Thomas and Alistair, and I even loved Lucie and Jesse more than I did in the previous books. And with Grace gracing the cover of the book, I’d hoped that I’d finally come to appreciate her character, but it still didn’t happen.
Overall, it was entertaining, and I found myself reading furiously to reach the end—hoping my characters would start acting like themselves again. Clare’s writing can still be beautiful, and I found several passages to highlight. If you’re a fan of the world, it’s probably a must-read—if only for the revisit with Will, Tessa, and Jem.

About the Author
A Song For A Book
Clare is good to always share a playlist for her books, and I was able to listen to this one some while I read. I’ll be including the Spotify playlist below, and I’ve chosen to highlight “Angels” by The xx.
Light reflects from your shadow
It is more than I thought could exist
You move through the room
Like breathing was easy
If someone believed me
They would be
As in love with you as I am
They would be
As in love with you as I am
They would be
As in love with you as I am
They would be
In love, love, love
And everyday
I am learning about you
The things that no one else sees
And the end comes too soon
Like dreaming of angels
And leaving without them…
And with words unspoken
A silent devotion
I know you know what I mean
And the end is unknown
But I think I’m ready
As long as you’re with me

Too bad this one wasn’t as good as expected, Dedra. Hopefully it was just a one off. Nice review.
