Synopsis:

The Renaissance Faire is on the move, and Lulu and Dex are along for the ride, in the next utterly charming rom-com from Jen DeLuca.

A high-powered attorney from a success-oriented family, Louisa “Lulu” Malone lives to work, and everything seems to be going right, until the day she realizes it’s all wrong. Lulu’s cousin Mitch introduced her to the world of Renaissance Faires, and when she spies one at a time just when she needs an escape, she leaps into the welcoming environment of turkey legs, taverns, and tarot readers. The only drawback? Dex MacLean: a guitarist with a killer smile, the Casanova of the Faire… and her traveling companion for the summer.

Dex has never had to work for much in his life, and why should he? Touring with his brothers as The Dueling Kilts is going great, and he always finds a woman at every Faire. But when Lulu proves indifferent to his many plaid charms and a shake-up threatens the fate of the band, Dex must confront something he never has before: his future.

Forced to spend days and nights together on the road, Lulu’s interest in the kilted bad boy grows as he shows her a side of himself no one else has seen. The stresses of her old lifestyle fade away as she learns to trust her intuition and follow her heart instead of her head. But when her time on the road is over, will Lulu go with her gut, or are she and Dex destined for separate paths?

My thoughts

(Spoiler free)

Well Traveled is the fourth installment in Jen DeLuca’s charming romance series set among Renaissance Faires. This time we get to accompany burned-out-lawyer Lulu as she joins Stacy, Daniel, and the rest of The Dueling Kilts—including handsome Dex—as they journey from faire to faire.

My phone rang for the fourth time that morning before I was through the gates of the Renaissance Faire. What was that one song called? “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked?” Ain’t no rest for lawyers, either. All I wanted was a break. A chance to breathe, while I waited in line for my turn to buy a ticket. But that wasn’t in the cards for me…

Jen DeLuca, Well Traveled

I was happy to be approved for an early copy of Well Traveled, my first from DeLuca, but I knew it meant I wanted to get caught up on the series. I’d only read the first book Well Met late last year, but I adored it, picking up copies for the second and third books when I could. I read Well Played a few months ago and Well Matched right before I picked up Well Traveled, so I’ve been happily immersed in the Ren Faire setting.

It’s always fun to check in on the characters we meet in other books, and most of them make an appearance in Well Traveled. We, of course, get to spend the most time with Stacy, Daniel, and Dex, but we also get to hang out with Mitch and April, as well. And there are plenty of new characters, including a very enigmatic group of fortune tellers who Lulu gets to work alongside.

I adored Lulu, Mitch’s cousin, when we met her in Well Matched, and I was happy Well Traveled became her story. Overworked and under appreciated, she decides to escape her life by joining up with the Ren Faire.

While it was hard to believe anyone would so quickly disengage from their life, it was fun to imagine it. We’ve all had those fantasies, right?! And getting to watch Lulu as she learned the ways of the Faire was very reminiscent of the first book, just with the addition of traveling and sleeping in a camper, which added a coziness to the experience.

Fans of the series may find it hard at first to warm up to Dex, known as the Casanova of Ren Faire, but it was nice to dive deeper into his backstory. DeLuca did a good job of rounding out his character and making him more empathetic.

More lighthearted than the previous books, Well Traveled is fun and refreshing, but I still found myself misty-eyed at the end—a rare occurrence for this reader. Steamy and romantic, it pulled all the right heartstrings!

Thank you to Berkley and Netgalley for an advanced reader’s copy.

Jen DeLuca

Jen DeLuca was born and raised near Richmond, Virginia, but now lives in Arizona with her husband and a houseful of rescue pets. She loves latte-flavored lattes, Hokies football, and the Oxford comma. Well Met is her first novel, inspired by her time volunteering as a pub wench with her local Renaissance Faire.

A Song For A Book

It seemed only right to highlight a song The Dueling Kilts were often performing in the book—and Lulu’s favorite—a traditional Irish vocal ballad recorded by many artists but made famous by The Dubliners, “Whiskey in the Jar”.

As I was a goin’ over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting
I first produced me pistol and I then produced me rapier
Saying “Stand and deliver” for he were a bold deceiver

Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar

I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy

Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da
Whack fall the daddy-o, whack fall the daddy-o
There’s whiskey in the jar…

  1. I loved this and the entire series. I agree, I’m not sure it was realistic for Lulu to just quit life and join the fair, but it sure was fun to think about.

  2. I do agree that this was more light hearted though I welcomed it. I felt like Dex’s backstory was very much like Mitch’s (being put in a box and all that), but I still enjoyed seeing him grow to want more for himself.

    1. I agree. I enjoyed the more lighthearted tone, as well. And you’re right. Dex and Mitch’s backstories were similar. I didn’t even think about that. But I was fine with not diving too deep into their histories with this one. I’m not sure why, but it worked!
