Synopsis:
We all have stories we never tell.
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her.
Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers: Owenβs sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As Hannahβs increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owenβs boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isnβt who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owenβs true identityβand why he really disappeared.
Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth, together. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owenβs past, they soon realize they are also building a new future. One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated.
My thoughts
(Spoiler free)
Wow. I couldn’t put this one down. I was super impressed with The Last Thing He Told Me, Laura Dave’s latest novel, a mystery thriller that’s very different from her previous two contemporary romances—that I also loved.
The story opens in Sausalito, California, the picturesque town on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, but much of the novel is spent on the streets of Austin, Texas. I’ve been to Sausalito and I’ve been to Austin several times, and I don’t know if that’s what made this mystery even more intriguing for me, but it was fun recognizing the places and experiences the author described.
Owen isn’t who I thought he was, at least not in the details. There are parts I wish didn’t exist, parts I can’t look away from now. In one way or another, this is the deal we all sign when we love someone. For better or worse. It’s the deal we have to sign again and again to keep that love. We don’t turn away from the parts of someone we don’t want to see.
From the first page, I liked Hannah, our straight-forward and sharp protagonist. Life has just thrown her the ultimate curve ball, but she trusts her instincts, putting her stepdaughter Bailey first. The flashbacks were well-placed and brief, rounding out her character and adding to the present-day tension. While I didn’t know where the plot would take me, I knew I could count on Hannah, which only made the story better, allowing me to settle back and enjoy the ride.
I also didn’t expect how emotionally invested I would be in the relationship between Hannah and Bailey. Who needs romance?? This was the relationship that had me misty-eyed, reading late into the night. Every teenager needs a Hannah in their life.
Mysteries and Thrillers are not my typical genres of choice. I’m usually underwhelmed by the twist, the denouement failing to compare to the rest of the book. But I was genuinely surprised by where this mystery led me. And while there were a few little things that raised my eyebrow, the author sold me on the delivery.
The details are not the whole story.
The Last Thing He Told Me was a welcome surprise, and will probably end up being in the top of my favorite reads for 2021. I’m so excited it’s been optioned by Reese Witherspoon for Apple TV+ as a limited series staring Julia Roberts! This one will also make a great beach read or book club choice. And it places Laura Dave easily among my auto-read authors!
Thank you to Simon Schuster and Netgalley for an advanced reader’s copy.

About the Author
A Song For A Book
The only music mentioned in The Last Thing He Told Me was Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, and when I started listening to it, I thought it actually fit nicely. I chose to highlight the song “Beautiful” performed by Jessie Mueller. I can imagine the lyrics as words of advice from Hannah to Bailey. I’ve included the entire Spotify album below!
You’ve got to get up every morning
With a smile in your face
And show the world all the love in your heart
Then people gonna treat you better
You’re gonna find, yes you will
That you’re beautiful, as you feel…

This sounds so gripping!!! Mystery books arenβt normally my cup of tea but I am so intrigued by this one. Fab review ππ§‘
I’m not a huge mystery fan either, but I really enjoyed this one. I’ll look forward to your thoughts, if you decide to pick it up! π
Great review, Dedra! This sounds like a really intriguing read! I have the author’s book Eight Hundred Grapes on my TBR and I’ve heard really good things but it also sounds like she writes great suspense mysteries, too! Definitely keen to check this one out–also cool that it’s been picked up for a show already!
Eight Hundred Grapes was my first book to read by her and I really enjoyed it, as well! I think this is her first Mystery so i was so impressed with how well it was done. If you decide to pick it up, let me know what you think! <3
This sounds neat! I do love it when there are good non-romantic relationships in books. It really rounds out the personalities and makes the characters more real.
As a hopeless romantic, I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed that aspect of this book. I guess I should give more non-romance a try! π
