Synopsis:

Logan Ramsay is about to get the brain he always dreamed of. But will he be transformed into something more than human…or something less? The mind-blowing new thriller from the ‘New York Times’ best-selling author of ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘Recursion’.

When the SWAT team gives the all-clear and Logan Ramsay steps into the basement, he has no idea that everything’s about to change.

Then there’s the hiss of aerosol. The explosion. The shrapnel that punctures his hazmat gear. Logan wakes up to find himself in a hospital bed, attended by doctors in their own hazmat suits, his wife and daughter looking on from behind the glass.

The doctors say he’s been infected by a virus–one designed not to make him sick, but to modify his very genetic structure. In a world where the next-generation gene-editing tool known as Scythe is widely available – and has already reaped disastrous consequences – the possibilities are too many and terrifying to count.

Except that after the fever, the pain, the fear…the virus is gone. And according to his government bosses, Logan’s got a clean bill of health.

But the truth is that with each day that passes, Logan’s getting smarter. Seeing things more clearly. He’s realizing that he’s been upgraded in ways that go beyond even Scythe’s capabilities – and that he’s been given these abilities for a reason.

Because a holy grail of genetic engineering – one that could change our very definitions of humanity – has just been unearthed. And now it’s up to him to stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

Logan’s becoming something more. Something better. Even with the whole world hunting for him, he might be able to outthink his opponents and win the war that’s coming.

But what if it’s at the cost of being himself?

My thoughts

(Spoiler free)

Blake Crouch’s latest sci-fi thriller set in the near future reads like a bellwether of terrifying atrocities and fantastic capabilities human beings might actually achieve someday soon. Upgrade is the third book I’ve read by the author, and he always manages to entertain, surprise, and illuminate me. Action-packed with a lead character to rally behind, I didn’t want to put this book down.

With the world being the dumpster fire it currently is and has been for the past few years, the imaginative things that occur in this book don’t really seem that far-fetched. I mean, at this point it seems like anything is possible, right? But while other books of this nature have just depressed me, this one was a welcome distraction. And I couldn’t ignore the similarities between Upgrade‘s futuristic world and the one we currently inhabit.

“In too many places, there was just grim survival. And beneath it: rage.”

Blake Crouch, Upgrade

Logan Ramsay doesn’t love his job at the GPA, the Gene Protection Agency, but he takes the life and death choices he must make very seriously, knowing personally the consequences of where one wrong decision can lead. Throughout the book he battles within himself over the hard choices he’s forced to make, often having to choose between himself, his family, and humanity. He’s a flawed hero who’s easy to root for.

Crouch does a wonderful job of building tension, keeping the reader guessing about what will happen, and keeping the reader turning pages. I thought the book was just the right length, with plenty of time to get to know the characters, but no lulls that I felt I needed to skim. And while Upgrade is a sci-fi thriller, it also contains some very moving passages about humans and our struggle to persevere.

“One child dies in a well, the world watches and weeps. But as the number of victims increases, our compassion tends to diminish. At the highest number of casualties—wars, tsunamis, acts of terror—the dead become faceless statistics. They call this compassion fade, but in reality, it’s our genetic inheritance—old adaptations from our ancestors persisting in our DNA.”

Blake Crouch, Upgrade

While I was reading, I could see scenes playing out like a movie in my head, so I was happy to discover it will be adapted by Steven Spielberg! I have a feeling Upgrade will be the thriller to read this summer. And it deserves all the hype!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to Ballantine Books and Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy.

A Song For A Book

Anytime I’m reading a book that’s action-packed and thrilling, the soundtrack playing in my head always contains some Muse selections. I’ve chosen to highlight, “Hurricanes and Butterflies”. The lyrics and sound perfectly capture the feel and tone of Upgrade.

Change everything you are
And everything you were
Your number has been called
Fights and battles have begun
Revenge will surely come
Your hard times are ahead

Best, you’ve got to be the best
You’ve got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
Your time is now (Your time is now)

Don’t let yourself down
Don’t let yourself go

Your last chance has arrived
Best, you’ve got to be the best
You’ve got to be the best
You’ve got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
Your time is now (Your time is now)

  1. Why am I not surprised that Crouch’s other works are being adapted for the screen? I’ve read a couple (Dark Matter and Summer Frost) and they really did feel like they’d been intended to be movies. I’m not sure his writing style is for me, though I do love his plot ideas! Maybe I’ll just hope this one gets an adaptation too, and watch it instead of reading it. πŸ˜‰

    1. He definitely has that screenwriter style of writing. I haven’t read Summer Frost yet, but I did like Dark Matter. I also really enjoyed Good Behavior, a tv series on TNT based on a character from one of his short stories. I was so bummed it didn’t make it to another season.

  2. I think my sci-fi experience has only really been time travel and space opera, but it does sounds like the author did a great job adding depth to this story. Glad it was such a hit for you.

  3. I really liked this one too! I agree, I was so happy to hear it was being adapted, because I think it will translate really well onscreen, too. I didn’t love it *quite* as much as Recursion, but I think it was very insightful and VERY timely! Glad you enjoyed it so much too! (Also I am digging the song choice, I think it is perfect!)

    1. Yay, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it, too. I can’t believe I haven’t read Recursion yet. But I do own it! Muse just seems to fit perfectly with sci-fi action, don’t they?!
