Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is a Bookish Memories (Share stories of your reading life as a child, events you’ve gone to, books that made an impression on you, noteworthy experiences with books, authors you’ve met, etc. Reminisce with me!).
Hello Readers! We have arrived at the last day of November, and just like I knew it would, the month has flown by. I haven’t been blog hopping as much as I’d like since I’ve been busy with Nanowrimo, but I finished a day early, so now I’m excited to catch up with everyone, as well as dive into my seasonal reads!
My memory has never been the best. I think my head is too full of song lyrics. While I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, I can remember lyrics from songs I haven’t heard in 20+ years!
Soooo I needed a way to simplify this post and give me some direction. My brain just wasn’t up for digging through my bookish memories. 😉 I started searching for bookish memories tags and came across this one by The Orangutan Librarian. It only had 9 prompts, so I created my own 10th one. 🙂 But even with simplifying today’s post, I still struggled with some of the prompts.
Let’s see what I managed to remember!
(Link to synopsis on Goodreads through the book title.)
No. 1: The first book you read (or was read to you)
Sadly, I have no memory of the first book I read, but I remember always having books around. One of my first bookish memories is of my mother reading to me from Stories of Childhood, a collection of nursery rhymes and fairytales.
No. 2: The first book you bought with your own money
Geez. I warned you about my memory… I have no memory of the first book I bought with my own money, either. I often purchased books on book fair day at school, and after I had my own job, I could spend hours browsing at the bookstore in our local mall. One of the first books I do remember purchasing as a young adult was this paperback copy of Little Women. I have a clear memory of being curled up in my bed late at night, falling in love with Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.
No. 3: A book you stayed up all night reading
I remember being unable to put down Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center, staying up until almost sunrise to finish it.
No. 4: A book or series you will never forget
I do try to avoid using Twilight as much as I can, but it is the series that reignited my love of reading after 10 years of rarely picking up a book. For that reason, it will always be unforgettable for me. Well, and the fact that it’s probably the series I’ve read the most.
No. 5: A book you frequently think about
After Twilight, I’ve probably read this series the most. And the second installment, Clockwork Prince, broke my heart. I’d probably be embarrassed about how many times poor Will crosses my mind.
No. 6: A scene that has haunted you for years
No spoilers here, but there’s a scene in Odd Thomas that will always haunt me.
No. 7: An unforgettable character
All the main characters in Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo are unforgettable, but Kaz is one of the most unique. I know I’ll never forget him.
No. 8: A book that changed your opinion
If you’re a follower, you know I’m not a big fan of audiobooks, but I recently listened to Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo and it showed me that there are audiobooks out there I can love!
No. 9: Share another random bookish memory
After obsessively reading Twilight, I decided to branch out and search for another addictive book series. This one by Karen Marie Moning came up repeatedly. I sped through this first book, Darkfever, located all the other books in the series that were currently available (5), and sped through them, as well. Then I immediately reread them all. 😉
No. 10: The book that ignited your love of reading
I’d always loved to read, but it was when we were assigned to read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton in high school that I discovered books could have layers of meaning, with gray areas between right and wrong.
Do we share any bookish memories? Let me know in the comments!
Things You Save in a Fire had me up all night too, such an absorbing story, I was obsessed!
Yes! i just finished her newest book, The Bodyguard, and I thought it was so good, too!
I enjoyed both the Twilight series and The Infernal Devices but I never reread any of the books. And even though I used to read a *lot* by Dean Koontz, I never read odd Thomas. I’m curious about the scene you mentioned.
Oooh, if you’re a fan of Koontz, you should give Odd Thomas a try. I think it’s one of his best.
This is such a fun post! Kaz is definitely a super memorable character – all of the characters from that series are fantastic! And I love Darkfever – sooo good. 🙂
Thank you! <3
I am amazed you can remember books from that long ago. I remember books I read for school, but not my pleasure reading so much. I always say I am going to listen to one of Acevedo’s books (did she narrate Clap?) because I heard her read her poetry and it was amazing.
Yes! She is one of the voices on Clap! It was so beautiful, and a super quick listen. 🙂
I think it’s basically impossible to remember your first ever book haha! I love little women. and I’m curious about things you save in a fire. Ah I love clap when you land- bet it worked so well as an audiobook- I’ll have to reread it that way some day. Thanks for linking to my post! Really enjoyed reading this! 😀
Oh, I hope you get to pick up Things You Save in a Fire sometime soon! <3
