Top Ten Tuesday: My Winter 2025 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Books on My Winter 2024-2025 To-Read List!

Hello Readers! My blogging and reading year has been atrocious for many various life reasons—good and not so good. I’ll probably get more into that in my End-of-the-Year Wrap-Up, but I’ve mostly decided to scrap this year and start fresh in January—which includes most of my winter tbr. Sadly, I only read three books from My Fall TBR, but I’m hoping I do better with this one. 🀞

Let’s see what I have planned to read this winter!

1

A Winter Wish by Emily Stone

Synopsis:

When an unexpected inheritance forces two total opposites to work together, Lexie must decide if Theo is going to push her outβ€”or pull her in for the kiss of a lifetimeβ€”in this heartwarming holiday novel from the author of Always, in December and One Last Gift

When Lexie learns of her father’s death, she doesn’t know how to feel; they’ve barely spoken in the last ten years. And she’s even more confused when she discovers he’s left her half of his holiday travel company, a successful niche business specializing in trips that explore the holiday traditions of cultures all over the world.

Meanwhile, the other half of the company has been left to her father’s handsome but bad-tempered young executive, Theo. And the will stipulates that the two of them must find a way to run the company together for a year before they decide its fate.

Lexie intends to leave once the year is over, even though, as a wanderer herself, she finds the company’s mission more compelling than she first thought. And a work trip to sizzling Spain reveals a chemistry between Lexie and Theo that is impossible to deny.

There may have been some snap judgments made about each other. But mixing business and pleasure isn’t always a good idea.

Goodreads

This is my current read, and much like I’ve done all year, I’m struggling to get through it. Not necessarily because of the material, just because of life.

This Is Not a Holiday Romance by Camilla Isley

Synopsis:

Two sworn enemies, snowed in over Christmas with chemistry that will melt the ice!

Nina Thompson has one Christmas wish: to avoid her brother’s obnoxiously handsome best friend, Tristan, like the plague. From the moment he humiliated her as a teenager to their escalating revenge schemes, Nina and Tristan’s relationship can only be defined as an all-out prank war! And there is yet to be a winner.

But it just so happens the ghost of Christmas present has other ideas. When Tristan unexpectedly crashes her family’s Christmas, Nina’s dreams of a peaceful holiday vanish faster than Santa up a chimney. Determined to end their rivalry for good, she braces herself for one last prank-filled showdown.

But when they find themselves snowed in, with no way of avoiding each other amongst the holiday festivities, they discover their heated exchanges have been masking a different kind of sizzle. Caught in a snow globe of holiday romance, they decide to let their fiery chemistry burn brightβ€”but this is absolutely and unequivocally nothing more than a secret fling destined to melt with the snow, this is not a forever romance…

This Is Not a Holiday Romance is an enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend, forced proximity rom-com perfect for fans of Sarah Adams, Abby Jimenez, and Lynn Painter.

Goodreads

I’m a fan of Isley, especially her holiday romances, so I’m hoping to get to this one. It probably won’t happen until after Christmas, but maybe by New Year’s??

I Think We’ve Been Here Before by Suzy Krause

Synopsis:

With the end of the world predicted, reality bends in an unexpectedly quirky and heartwarming novel about human connection and the meaning of life and death by the bestselling author of Sorry I Missed You

In the same week, Marlen and Hilda’s family receives two significant pieces of news: One, Marlen has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Two, a cosmic blast is set to render humanity extinct within a matter of months. It seems the coming Christmas on their Saskatchewan farm could be everyone’s last.

Preparing for the inevitable, they navigate the time they have left together. Marlen and Hilda channel their energy into improbably prophetic works of art. Hilda’s elderly father receives a longed-for visitor from his past. Hilda’s preteen nephew goes missing, and his mother refuses to believe the world is ending. All the while, Hilda’s daughter struggles to find her way home from Berlin with the help of an oddly familiar stranger. For everyone, there’s an unsettling feeling that this unprecedented reality is somehow something they all remember.

As the planet holds its collective breath to see what happens next, the familyβ€”amid chaos, denial, acceptance, and hopeβ€”determines to live every moment as if it is their last. Because, well, it just might be.

Goodreads

I usually avoid terminal illness books, but I keep seeing good reviews for this one. And I’m trusting the “quirky and heartwarming” description.

Humor Me by Cat Shook

Synopsis:

A love letter to the New York City stand-up scene, as told by a charmingly jaded assistant at a late-night talk show―for fans of Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld

Presley Fry is not amused. She’s been an assistant at the Late Night Show for way too long, she’s adopted a β€œbusiness casual” approach to dating to save herself from the embarrassment of seeking genuine connection, and she’s content to allow her gregarious roommate, Isabelle, to orchestrate her entire social life. And yet, Presley is absolutely enamored with her job and the world of stand-up comedy. The joy she finds in discovering up-and-coming comedians, the beauty and connection in their shared humor―it’s enough for now.

Enter Susan Clark, the childhood best friend of Presley’s late mother, whose death still knocks the wind out of Presley whenever she reaches for the phone. Susan is married to the head of the network where Presley works, and she is determined to take Presley under her wing and ease her way through life in the big city. She’s also determined to connect Presley with her son, the bright and affable Lawrence, who couldn’t be further from Presley’s type.

As Presley grapples with the loss of her mother and finds her people among those who seek out comedy to make the world a bit brighter, Humor Me reminds us that friendship can emerge from where you least expect it and that shared laughter can ease some of the deepest pain.

Goodreads

I won an ARC of this one in a giveaway but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m determined! I enjoyed Shook’s last book and I’m a fan of the premise.

Goodreads
Expected January 7, 2025

This will be my first ARC of 2025 and I didn’t even read the synopsis before I accepted it. I’ll read anything by Adrienne Young. Can’t wait for it!

6

Show Don’t Tell by Curtis Sittenfeld

Synopsis:

A funny, fiercely intelligent, and moving collection exploring marriage, friendship, fame, and artistic ambitionβ€”including a story that revisits the main character from Curtis Sittenfeld’s iconic novelΒ Prepβ€”from theΒ New York TimesΒ bestselling author ofΒ EligibleΒ andΒ Romantic Comedy

In her second story collection, Sittenfeld shows why she’s as beloved for her short fiction as she is for her novels. In these dazzling stories, she conjures up characters so real that they seem like old friends, laying bare the moments when their long held beliefs are overturned.

In β€œThe Patron Saints of Middle Age,” a woman visits two friends she hasn’t seen since her divorce. In β€œA for Alone,” a married artist embarks on a creative project intended to disprove the so-called Mike Pence Rule, which suggests that women and men can’t spend time alone together without lusting after each other. And in β€œLost but Not Forgotten,” Sittenfeld gives readers of her novel Prep a window into the world of her beloved character Lee Fiora, decades later, when Lee attends an alumni reunion at her boarding school.

Hilarious, thought-provoking, and full of tenderness for her characters, Sittenfeld’s stories peel back layer after layer of our inner lives, keeping us riveted to the page with her utterly distinctive voice.

Goodreads
Expected February 25, 2025

I adored Sittenfeld’s first collection of short stories and Romantic Comedy was one of my favorite books of 2023, so I have high hopes for this one.

Say a Little Prayer by Jenna Voris

Synopsis:

A wry, heartfelt tale of a teen who’s taking her church camp by stormβ€”one deadly sin at a time.

Riley quietly left church a year ago when she realized there was no place for a bi girl in her congregation. But it wasn’t until the pastor shunned her older sister for getting an abortion that she really wanted to burn it all down.

It’s just her luck, then, that she’s sent to the principal’s office for slapping a girl talking smack about her sisterβ€”and in order to avoid suspension, she has to spend spring break at church.

Goodreads
Expected March 4, 2025

As someone who’s been deconstructing their faith, I couldn’t resist the invitation to read this one.

8

Challenger by Adam Higginbotham

Synopsis:

The definitive, dramatic, minute-by-minute story of the Challenger disaster based on new archival research and in-depth reporting.

On January 28, 1986, just seventy-three seconds into flight, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all seven people on board. Millions of Americans witnessed the tragic deaths of a crew including New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like 9/11 or JFK’s assassination, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in 20th-century historyβ€”yet the details of what took place that day, and why, have largely been forgotten. Until now.

Based on extensive archival records and meticulous, original reporting,Β ChallengerΒ follows a handful of central protagonistsβ€”including each of the seven members of the doomed crewβ€”through the years leading up to the accident, a detailed account of the tragedy itself, and into the investigation that followed. It’s a tale of optimism and promise undermined by political cynicism and cost-cutting in the interests of burnishing national prestige; of hubris and heroism; and of an investigation driven by leakers and whistleblowers determined to bring the truth to light. Throughout, there are the ominous warning signs of a tragedy to come, recognized but then ignored, and ultimately kept from the public.

Higginbotham reveals the history of the shuttle program, the lives of men and women whose stories have been overshadowed by the disaster as well as the designers, engineers, and test pilots who struggled against the odds to get the first shuttle into space.

Goodreads

I was only a child when the Challenger tragedy happened, but watching it happen live with my fellow classmates is something I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

9

Deep End by Ali Hazelwood

Synopsis:

A competitive diver and an ace swimmer jump into forbidden waters in this steamy college romance from theΒ New York TimesΒ bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis.

Scarlett Vandermeer is swimming upstream. A Junior at Stanford and a student-athlete who specializes in platform diving, Scarlett prefers to keep her head down, concentrating on getting into med school and on recovering from the injury that almost ended her career. She has no time for relationshipsβ€”at least, that’s what she tells herself.

Swim captain, world champion, all-around aquatics golden boy, Lukas Blomqvist thrives on discipline. It’s how he wins gold medals and breaks records: complete focus, with every stroke. On the surface, Lukas and Scarlett have nothing in common. Until a well-guarded secret slips out, and everything changes.

So they start an arrangement. And as the pressure leading to the Olympics heats up, so does their relationship. It was supposed to be just a temporary, mutually satisfying fling. But when staying away from Lukas becomes impossible, Scarlett realizes that her heart might be treading into dangerous water…

Goodreads
Expected February 4, 2025

I would love an ARC of this one, but I’ll definitely be getting my hands on it one way or another. I love Hazelwood, diving, and the Olympics.

After a lifetime of bounties and bloodshed, Viv is hanging up her sword for the last time.
