Top Ten Tuesday: Books Set in My Home State

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Books Set In X (Pick a setting and share books that are all set there. This could be a specific continent or country, a state, in outer space, underwater, on a ship or boat, at the beach, etc.)

Hello Readers! November has flown by. I have been busy with Nanowrimo and life, but I have still been reading—mostly late at night on my kindle. I am looking forward to the end of Nano and lots of family time in the next month. We will be traveling part of December, as well, but I will have posts scheduled to go up. It may take me a few weeks, but I will get to any comments you leave. Eventually. πŸ₯°

Ever since I discovered Sam @ We Live and Breath Books had a regular post featuring locations with the books that share the setting, I’ve wanted to do a post on books set in my home state of Texas. This seemed to be the perfect week to make that happen! These are all books I’ve read and recommend, as well.

Let’s take a look at the books I’ve read set in Texas!

(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)

  1. From Lukov With Love by Mariana Zapata – Zapata has several books set in Texas, but this one remains my favorite so far.
  2. How to Walk Away by Katherine Center – The same goes for Center, although I don’t know if I can pick a favorite book of hers, so I went with the first book I read by the author.
  3. West Side Love Story by Priscilla Oliveras – This is the first book in a unique series set in San Antonio that centers on a group of sisters in a Mariachi Band. My Review
  4. Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood – I adored this romance set at the NASA center in Houston.
  5. Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy – If you want to know what living in a small Texas town is like, you can pick up this YA novel. I was surprised by how reminiscent it was for me, even though we did not have a beauty pageant. πŸ˜ƒ
  6. Tigers, Not Daughters by Samantha Mabry – I’ve read all three of the novels written by this Texan author, but this YA retelling of Little Women is my favorite.
  7. 11/22/63 by Stephen King – While I don’t like why this book is set in Texas, it’s a fascinating read!
  8. Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu – Another book that gets life in a small Texas town right, this book had me wishing I could go back in time and start my own rebellion.
  9. The Husbands by Chandler Baker – I honestly didn’t remember that this thriller is set in Texas, but it is set in a fictional suburban neighborhood so maybe that’s why. (Her previous novel Whisper Network, which I also enjoyed, is also set in Texas.) My Review
  10. Confess by Colleen Hoover – I haven’t read some of Hoover’s most popular books yet, but Confess, which is set in Dallas, remains my favorite of hers so far.

Have you read any of these yet? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Wandering!

  1. There do seem to be a lot of books set in Texas, don’t there? I’ve read two of these: HOW TO WALK AWAY (which I loved) and TIGERS, NOT DAUGHTERS (which was, unfortunately, not my favorite). DUMPLIN’ is one I still need to get to. Great list!

    Happy TTT!

    1. I love all of Center’s books, many of which are set in Texas. And I’m sorry you didn’t like Tigers, Not Daughters! Dumplin’ is one I wish I’d read sooner. πŸ™‚

  2. I need to read more by Center! Of the FEW books I’ve read this year, hers was one that stands out and really surprised me in the best of ways. πŸ™‚

  3. There are lots of great books set in Texas! I loved Hoover’s, Zapata’s, Center’s, Hazelwood’s, and Murphy’s. I also read a great series called Texas Heat by Fern Michaels.

  4. So glad I was able to inspire you. I always read lots of books set in your home state. Mine, not so much (unless we go by where I was born/childhood – that was Brooklyn). I am pretty sure most of Murphy’s YA/MG books are set in TX. Most of Center’s too. I love that Center book, but I think Fire is my favorite.

    1. Yes! I think most of Murphy’s are set in Texas. I can never pick a favorite of Center’s. I still have a few of her older books to read, too. I think The Bodyguard might be my most favorite so far, but I have a soft spot for How to Walk Away since it was my first Center book. πŸ™‚

  5. Such a fun idea to go with books that are set in your home state. And there are a lot of books set in Texas! I’ve only read Love on the Brain from your list, but it was a cute one. πŸ˜€

  6. Great choices, Dedra. I would never have thought From Lukov with Love would be set in Texas. It is still on my TBR and I will read it in January for sure this year!!
