Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Books I Would Hand to Someone Who Claims to Not Like Reading.
Hello Readers! November is here and I’ve already been indulging in all things pumpkin-spiced. We’re also finally enjoying some cool weather here in Texas, which makes me want to just curl up and read. Non-readers have no idea what they’re missing! π
The idea of handing a non-reader a book I personally recommend is a little terrifying to me. What if they don’t like it? What if I turn them off of books for the rest of their lives?? But for today, I’m going to ignore that possibility. I’m choosing books by genre, and I’m selecting books that are rated highly, popular among all readers, and fast-paced.
Let’s see what I came up with!
(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)
- Contemporary Romance – The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
alternate – The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker - Young Adult Contemporary – The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
alternate – Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli - Thriller – The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
alternate – The Silent Corner by Dean Koontz - Sci-Fi – The Martian by Andy Weir
alternate – Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - Classics – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
alternate – To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Non-Fiction – Educated by Tara Westover
alternate – Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang - Young Adult Fantasy – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling
alternate – The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater - Mystery – Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
alternate – The Dry by Jane Harper - Adult General Fiction – Beartown by Fredrik Backman
alternate – Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng - Historical Fiction – The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
alternate – Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Would you recommend any of these to non-readers? Let me know in the comments!
Nice list. I broke mine up by genre, too. I still want to read The Unhoneymooners. To Kill A Mockingbird is in my closet along with its sequel, waiting to be read.
Thanks for sharing.

Oh, The Unhoneymooners is fantastic! And I’ve never read the sequel to TKAM, either. I wasn’t sure if I should with all the varying opinions about it. π
The Unhoneymooners is a good pick. It’s light and easy, it’s funny… who wouldn’t love that? π And The Simple Wild is another good one… one of my favorites!
Yes!! Two of my favorites, too. π
I adore Backman, and his books sell in high numbers, but I sometimes wonder about his style for some. It’s a bit quiet, but he really builds to that gut punch every time.
Very true. I just remember being unable to put it down. π
Fast-paced books are the best choices for people who don’t think they like reading! Great list. π

I think so, too. π
Hm… not sure Beartown would be so great for people who say they don’t read… But good on you for this list!
It does have a more serious subject, but personally, I couldn’t put it down, which is why I thought of it. π
He’s coming out with the third book in the series soon – probably early next year. I can hardly wait!
Yes! I’m excited for that one, too!
Great list! I’ve heard so many good things about The Unhoneymooners, I really need to try it.
It’s still probably my favorite of Christina Lauren’s. It’s so fun!
These are all such great recommendations! I think your choice of The Martian was a brilliant one, because although it’s science jargon heavy, it’s also extremely readable and quite funny! And as someone who doesn’t read a lot of general adult fiction, I can vouch that Little Fires Everywhere is a great starting point!
Thank you! <3 I felt the same way about The Martian. Even though it seemed like it had a lot of scientific and mathematical jargon, I never felt confused. :)
