Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Titles or Covers That Made Want to Read/Buy the Book, but I’m going for the opposite result.
Hello Readers! Whether we’re ready or not, August is here! I’m hoping my last month of summer won’t fly by too fast. Although here in Texas, it’ll feel like summer until October!
The most exciting thing happening in our house is the addition of a new pet! When the neighborhood cat Johnny—who had pretty much adopted us—suddenly disappeared, we decided we needed a new kitten. Johnny had become a permanent fixture on our back porch and he kept all the animals we didn’t want around away. We also didn’t realize just how attached we’d become to him. The plan was we’d eventually get another cat we could raise to be an indoor and outdoor cat. BUT you don’t have to wait long here in Texas before someone knows someone who has kittens. π
Meet Gansey! My oldest daughter and I are fans of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle, so we quickly came up with the perfect name. I also remembered this Top Ten Tuesday post Character Names I’d Give To My Pet I did last year. Yep, Gansey was on there! When he isn’t sleeping, he’s terrorizing our two other indoor kitties!
Today we’re talking about book titles that made us want to read other books, but I’m doing a bit of a twist with book titles that made me NOT want to read a book. But I did anyway. π Let’s see what I chose!
(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shafer and Annie Barrows – Whenever I heard or saw this title, I was immediately turned off from the book. But I could’t ignore all the rave reviews for it, finally reading AND adoring it!
- Easy by Tammara Webber – So many better titles could have been chosen for this book. Literally anything. It makes it sound like it’s all about promiscuity, but it isn’t.
- The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang – As someone who hates math, I ignored this book for so long, but I couldn’t ignore it forever. And I’m so happy I didn’t.
- Things in Jars by Jess Kidd – This title does not bring pleasant things to my mind. π
- Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane – I never really understood this title. Even after I read it.
- The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger – Until I finally read it, I thought this was a book about baseball.
- Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner – Another misleading title. There’s so much more to this book than sex.
- Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage – This title unnerved me even before I read it. Maybe because I hate going to the dentist?!
- After Math by Denise Grover Swank – Another title that involves the dreaded ‘M’ word.
- Turtles All the Way Down by John Green – This title made sense once I’d read the book, but it didn’t really grab my attention initially. And, honestly, I’ve already forgotten what it meant. π
Did any of these titles make you NOT want to read the book? Let me know in the comments!
Love your twist on this week’s topic! I wasn’t sure about The Kiss Quotient either, but I ended up enjoying it.
Yes! I’m excited to read The Heart Principle eventually. <3
I STILL havenβt read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society! Great list. Mineβs here: https://fiftytwo.blog/2021/08/03/top-ten-tuesday-cool-titles-and-covers/
Oh, I hope you can pick it up soon. It is just the sweetest book. I thought it was perfect. <3
OK, on your recommendation, Iβll fit it in. Somewhere. βοΈ
Your new kitty is adorable. That first title is quite a mouthful. I am actually intrigued by it, but I know I would be mad if it was meaningless and left unexplained when I finished the book. The Green title was odd, but I loved learning the meaning behind it.
Oh the Guernsey title totally makes sense once you read the book. I thought it was such a lovely book. I gave it five stars!
Baby Teeth’s title jumped out to me the first time I saw it.
Yes! It’s weird how even without the cover I would immediately think it’s a creepy book. Haha!
Yes, definitely!
I know what you mean about a book title turning you away from a book! The “Potato Peel Pie” part of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for me has always felt icky, and so I’ve been avoiding that book, too. π
My TTT
Haha! Yes, but I promise it totally makes sense once you read it. It was a five-star read for me. And I love the adaptation, too. <3
I’m glad it does make sense eventually!
Great twist on the topic, Dedra! Not sure I really thought about it before now, but the ‘Guernsey’ title could have played a role in my ignoring that one for so long. Either way, I’m glad I read it because I did end up loving it. π
It was such a great book, wasn’t it! I loved the adaptation, too. <3
Congrats on the new addition!! So cute and I love the name!
I loved your take this week. I might have to use it when I don’t feel like doing the topic in a certain week! I totally agree that some of these covers really didn’t appeal to me. I felt the same about Easy but I did read it. One that absolutely comes to mind is Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo because I would have never picked that up without all the rave reviews in the blogging world!
Thanks Leslie! Oh, Seven Husbands is a good one! I also probably wouldn’t have picked it up on the title alone. π
Same!! Title and cover for that one!
Awww, your new kitten is so cute. I hope he is everything you want in a pet. I love your twist on this week’s top ten, Dedra. I know there are books I ignored because of the title, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.
He’s been a lot of fun so far! <3
Your kitty is SO adorable and I love the name you’ve chosen π
Also, I find it quite funny that some of the titles that turned you off from reading a book are the ones that made me WANT to read the book, haha! For some reason Ask Again, Yes and Baby Teeth are two titles that always bring me back to wanting to read these books (though I haven’t yet π)!
Thank you! He’s been keeping us on our toes. Haha!
Oh really?! That is funny. I can see how they’d make you curious. π
