After visiting New York, my husband gifted me a subscription to The Strand’s The Book HookUp. We’d visited New York City for the first time at Christmas in 2018, stopping in at The Strand bookstore, of course, so it was the perfect gift. What I love about this subscription is that it’s quarterly, so not a huge commitment.
- Boxes ship out in March, June, September, and December—or Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.
- The box comes with two books—typically one is a signed currently hyped book and the other is an advanced reader copy.
- It also includes other bookish and local goodies.
The Summer box seems to be going for a darker theme, with books about death, a hard-hitting magazine, and some chocolate. But they did include one sunnier item. π
Let’s wander in!
My box is a young adult box, but you can choose from a variety of boxes, including fiction, classics, and sci-fi. However, the prices differ for some of the boxes. There’s also a spoiler link on the website where you can see what the main title will be in your next box. I can never resist a peek!
What I found inside:
The Books
(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)
- This box included a signed hardback of A Year to the Day by Robin Benway! I was very excited to find this one in my box because I had already added it to my TBR. I’ve heard good things! It’s told in reverse chronological order, which is just so intriguing.
- Also included was a copy of How to Make Friends With the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow, which published in 2019 and has glowing reviews! I haven’t read a book by Glasgow yet, but I did just read Up All Night which includes a short story by her that is ultra spooky.
A Year to the Day Synopsis:
Itβs been a yearβa year of missing Nina. A year of milestonesβholidays, birthdays, everything without her.
Leo feels like she should remember what happened that night. But all she knows is that she left the party and got into a car with Nina and Ninaβs boyfriend, East.
East, who once promised Nina heβd watch out for her younger sister. East, who has been trying to keep that promise every day since. But East wonβt give Leo the one thing she wantsβthe one thing she needs. He wonβt tell her anything about the accident. He wonβt talk about that night at all.
As the days tumble one into the next, Leoβs story comes together while her world falls apart. The only constant is the one person who can help her bear the enormous weight of her love for Ninaβand East might be carrying too heavy a load of his own.Β

I am happy that you enjoyed your box, Dedra. I hope the books are wonderful for you.
Thank you Carla!
What a fun box! I love that little Soleil Trinket Tray.
Yes! I was pretty excited about that one. Now to find the perfect place for it. π
I know Glasgow’s books tend a bit darker, but this is one I do want to read. I am have a thing for grief books. Look at that, grief is like the box’s theme. Hope you enjoy all your new goodies.
Yes! Grief IS like the box’s theme. I have to be in the right mood for grief books, but YA ones are usually more manageable. I was pretty impressed with Glasgow’s short story in Up All Night, so I’m excited about this one.
I think Benway and Glasgow are two of the best authors out there. I have read everything by Glasgow and absolutely love her writing!
Oh yay!! I’m so happy to hear that. I haven’t been disappointed with a book from this subscription yet. They make good choices!
I am OBSESSED with that trinket tray! βοΈ
Isn’t it cute?! I took a peek at their website and they have tons of cool designs. π
