Hello Readers! I hope you’re all warm and well at the start of a new year. While we had an unseasonably warm Christmas, the cold has finally settled in here, but at least the sun is shining! I’m still playing catch-up on all the posts I didn’t have ready to go, and it will be nice to return to my regular schedule—as well as finally find some time to read. Which is what we’re all here for. 😉
I have a fairly optimistic TBR for January. I have four ARCs (advanced readers copies) for January and four for February, so I need to stay on top of those. I’ve also included a book that was on My December TBR that is my current read. I only read 2 books from my TBR last month, so let’s hope I do better this month!
Let’s see what I’ll be reading in the new year!
10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston
This is my current read, which appeared on my December TBR, and I’m enjoying it. It’s well-written and fun!
Synopsis:
Sophie wants one thing for Christmas-a little freedom from her overprotective parents. So when they decide to spend Christmas in South Louisiana with her very pregnant older sister, Sophie is looking forward to some much needed private (read: make-out) time with her long-term boyfriend, Griffin. Except it turns out that Griffin wants a little freedom from their relationship. Cue devastation.
Heartbroken, Sophie flees to her grandparents’ house, where the rest of her boisterous extended family is gathered for the holiday. That’s when her nonna devises a (not so) brilliant plan: Over the next ten days, Sophie will be set up on ten different blind dates by different family members. Like her sweet cousin Sara, who sets her up with a hot guy at an exclusive underground party. Or her crazy aunt Patrice, who signs Sophie up for a lead role in a living nativity. With a boy who barely reaches her shoulder. And a screaming baby.
When Griffin turns up unexpectedly and begs for a second chance, Sophie feels more confused than ever. Because maybe, just maybe, she’s started to have feelings for someone else . . . Someone who is definitely not available.
This is going to be the worst Christmas break ever… or is it?

Digging Up Love (Taste of Love, #1) by Chandra Blumberg
I’m hoping this one is as refreshing and unique as it sounds!
Synopsis:
From debut author Chandra Blumberg comes a playful, heartfelt romance about chasing your dreams and finding love in the process.
Alisha Blake works her magic in the kitchen, creating delectable desserts for her grandfather’s restaurant in rural Illinois. Though Alisha relishes the close relationship she has with her family, she can’t help but dream about opening a cookie shop in Chicago. She may be a small-town baker, but Alisha has big ambitions.
Then a dinosaur bone turns up in her grandparents’ backyard. When paleontologist Quentin Harris arrives to see the discovery for himself, he’s hoping that the fossil will distract him from a recent painful breakup. Instead, he finds Alisha—and sparks fly. The big-city academic and the hometown baker seem destined for a happily ever after.
But Alisha is scared to fall in love. And Quentin’s trying to make a name for himself in a competitive field, which gets even more complicated when the press shows up at the dig site. For love to prevail, the two may have to put old bones aside—and focus on the future.

This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens
This is a backlist book that I’m really hoping to get to this month.
Synopsis:
In this warm-hearted love story for fans of One Day in December, a man and woman who were born at the same hospital on New Year’s Day meet on their thirtieth birthday and discover the many times their paths almost crossed before.
Down-to-earth baker Minnie Cooper knows two things with great certainty: that her New Year’s birthday has always been unlucky, and that it’s all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she’s never met. Minnie and Quinn were born at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year’s Day thirty years before, and not only did he edge her out by mere minutes to win the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990, but he stole the name she was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it’s no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.
When Minnie unexpectedly runs into Quinn at a New Year’s party on their mutual thirtieth birthday, she sees only more evidence that fortune has continued to favor him. The handsome, charming business owner truly seems to have it all–including the perfect girlfriend. But if Quinn and Minnie are from different worlds, why do they keep bumping into each other? And why is it that each frustrating interaction somehow seems to leave them both hoping for more?

The Wedding Setup: A Short Story by Sonali Dev
I was invited to read this Amazon Original Short Story by Sonali Dev, and I figured it would be a good way to be introduced to the author. And the early reviews are great!
Synopsis:
From USA Today bestselling author Sonali Dev comes a heartfelt short story about one woman’s journey of self-discovery and what it means to be happy.
Ayesha Shetty lost her brother seven years ago, the same time she lost everything else important to her: her dreams, her fierce independence, and the man she loved. Not wanting to see her mother hurt anymore, she put her wild self away and became the dutiful daughter her mother needed and took on her brother’s role in the family business.
Now her best friend’s big, fat Indian wedding is a chance to get away from her endless duties at the restaurant and maybe even have some fun (if she remembers how). But a setup arranged by her mother, with a doctor no less, is the last thing she needs. The fact that he checks all her mother’s boxes just makes everything better…and worse.
Then Emmitt Hughes shows up. Her brother’s best friend. The love she once chose over family duties and her responsibilities. The one she asked to leave, and who did. The one who knows the real Ayesha. Torn between a love from the past that could cost her the only person she has left and her sense of obligation to her mother, will Ayesha find the strength to stop thinking about what everyone else wants and finally put herself first? Or is the old Ayesha truly gone for good?

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves by Meg Long
I was invited to read this YA fantasy back in June of last year. It sounds like a perfect winter-read, and the early reviews are encouraging!
Synopsis:
After angering a local gangster, seventeen-year-old Sena Korhosen must flee with her prize fighting wolf, Iska, in tow. A team of scientists offer to pay her way off her frozen planet on one condition: she gets them to the finish line of the planet’s infamous sled race. Though Sena always swore she’d never race after it claimed both her mothers’ lives, it’s now her only option.
But the tundra is a treacherous place, and as the race unfolds and their lives are threatened at every turn, Sena starts to question her own abilities. She must discover whether she’s strong enough to survive the wild – whether she and Iska together are strong enough to get them all out alive.
A captivating debut about survival, found family, and the bond between a girl and a wolf that delivers a fresh twist on classic survival stories and frontier myths.

The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain
I’ve read and enjoyed several of Chamberlain’s historical fiction stories, but I don’t think I’ve read one that’s more mystery. This one already has 800+ reviews with a 4.39 rating on Goodreads!
Synopsis:
From the Sunday Times top ten bestselling author of The Silent Sister and Big Lies in a Small Town comes a powerful, gripping and unmissable new novel.
Secrets won’t stay silent forever.
2020. A recently widowed architect moves into the home she and her late husband designed, heartbroken that he will never cross the threshold. But when disturbing things begin to happen, it’s clear that someone is sending her a warning. Who is trying to frighten her away, and why? It is only when she meets an elderly neighbour that she learns the street has a shocking and tragic past. A past that some will go to any lengths to keep hidden.
1964. A young white female student becomes involved in the fight for civil rights in North Carolina, falling in love with one of her fellow activists, in a time and place where an interracial relationship must be hidden from family, friends and especially the reemerging Ku Klux Klan. As tensions rise in the town, she realises not everyone is who they appear to be.
Decades later, past and present are set to collide in the last house on the street…

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson
Another book that is getting great early buzz is this debut about two siblings and their puzzling inheritance.
Synopsis:
In this moving debut novel, two estranged siblings must set aside their differences to deal with their mother’s death and her hidden past–a journey of discovery that takes them from the Caribbean to London to California and ends with her famous black cake.
We can’t choose what we inherit. But can we choose who we become?
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a traditional Caribbean black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child, challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage, and themselves.
Can Byron and Benny reclaim their once-close relationship, piece together Eleanor’s true history, and fulfill her final request to “share the black cake when the time is right”? Will their mother’s revelations bring them back together or leave them feeling more lost than ever?
Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names, can shape relationships and history. Deeply evocative and beautifully written, Black Cake is an extraordinary journey through the life of a family changed forever by the choices of its matriarch.

Good Girl Complex by Elle Kennedy
This will be my first book to read by Kennedy, but it sounds like a romance I’ll enjoy!
Synopsis:
She does everything right. So what could go wrong?
Mackenzie “Mac” Cabot is a people pleaser. Her demanding parents. Her prep school friends. Her long-time boyfriend. It’s exhausting, really, always following the rules. Unlike most twenty-year-olds, all she really wants to do is focus on growing her internet business, but first she must get a college degree at her parents’ insistence. That means moving to the beachside town of Avalon Bay, a community made up of locals and the wealthy students of Garnet College.
Mac’s had plenty of practice suppressing her wilder impulses, but when she meets local bad boy Cooper Hartley, that ability is suddenly tested. Cooper is rough around the edges. Raw. Candid. A threat to her ordered existence. Their friendship soon becomes the realest thing in her life.
Despite his disdain for the trust-fund kids he sees coming and going from his town, Cooper soon realizes Mac isn’t just another rich clone and falls for her. Hard. But as Mac finally starts feeling accepted by Cooper and his friends, the secret he’s been keeping from her threatens the only place she’s ever felt at home.

What are you most excited to read this month? Have you read any of these books yet? Let me know in the comments!
10 Blind Dates is a favorite of mine. I loved that family. I saw you were enjoying it, so, YEAH!
Yes! I finally finished this morning and it was so fun! And I was happy to discover there’s a second Messina book about Olivia. Have you read that one?
Just saw on Goodreads that you have! Happy to see you enjoyed it, as well!
I have. It was cute, but the family wasn’t in it as much, and they were such a big part of my enjoyment. It didn’t wow me like Dates did, but I liked it.
Oh ok. Yeah, the family makes it so much better.
I’ve been meaning to try something by Diane Chamberlain for quite a while. The Last House on the Street sounds like a good one!
I’m pretty excited about the mystery aspect. I’ve also enjoyed Big Lies in a Small Town and Stolen Marriage from her. 🙂
Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves sounds amazing! I hope you enjoy all of these!
I should be getting to that one soon. Fingers crossed it’s as good as it sounds. 🙂
I hope you love it!
10 blind dates was my favorite book of 2019. the december 21st blind date is my absolute favorite.
Yes! That one was so funny!! Kudos to the author for each date being unique and creative. 🙂
Good Girl Complex was one of my more recent TBR additions! It looks so good 😍 The Wedding SetUp has piqued my interest as well and I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Sonali Dev is an author I’ve been hoping to try for a while now! I also really need to read This Time Next Year, especially since its been on my December possibility piles for the last two years? 😂 I hope you enjoy all these reads, Dedra!
Same here with This Time Next Year. 🤦♀️ I have high hopes of getting to it this month, but I’m already behind on my ARCs. So it’s not looking good. Ha! I’ve seen a few mixed reviews for Good Girl Complex–readers saying it wasn’t as good as her other books. But since I’ve never read anything by her, I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it. 🙂
These are some great sounding books. I look forward to seeing what you think of them!
2022 is looking like another great year for books! Hopefully I can get to most of these. 😉
Ooh these sound great! Admittedly, I’ve heard of none of them so I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Hope you have a good month and year!
