WWW Wednesday

WWW Wednesday was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Three Ws are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What I’m Currently Reading

I’m currently reading three books, which I don’t do very often. I’m typically a one book at a time kind of reader, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m trying to wrap-up my yearly challenge, The POPSUGAR Reading Challenge. I only have two book prompts left. And I’m also trying to stay ahead of my out-of-control ARC situation.

I’m currently reading and/or listening to Northanger Abbey with Kindle’s Text to Speech. I can only do audio books when I’m busy doing something else like cleaning or exercising. Otherwise, I want to see the words! I’m about 25% done. It’s been many years since I’ve read Northanger Abbey so most of it is new to me again. This will cross off my book set in an abbey, cloister, monastery, vicarage, or convent prompt!

During an eventful season at Bath, young, naive Catherine Morland experiences the joys of fashionable society for the first time. She is delighted with her new acquaintances flirtatious Isabella, who shares Catherines love of Gothic romance and horror, and sophisticated Henry and Eleanor Tilney, who invite her to their fathers mysterious house, Northanger Abbey. There, her imagination influenced by novels of sensation and intrigue, Catherine imagines terrible crimes committed by General Tilney.

One of the last prompts I couldn’t seem to fulfill was ?a book inspired by mythology, legend, or folklore. I had fully intended to read Circe, but never got around to it. So when I realized D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths that I’m currently reading with my son would suffice, I was happy to cross this one off! (Bonus: I’m having so much fun refreshing my memory!)

Here are the gods, goddesses, and legendary figures of ancient Greece–mighty Zeus, with his fistful of thunderbolts; gray-eyed Athena, goddess of wisdom; Helios, the sun; greedy King Midas–lavishly depicted by Caldecott winners Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire. In a relaxed and humorous tone, these splendid artists bring to life the myths that have inspired great European literature and art through the ages, creating a book readers of all ages will cherish.

The Family Upstairs is an ARC I was invited to read through Netgalley. I really didn’t need to add another book to my toppling TBR, but I couldn’t resist this one. It seemed so perfect for this time of year too. I’ve read about 35% so far, and as of right now, I’d say this will be a 4 star read for me. It will be available on November 5th. Be on the lookout for a full review to come soon!

Gifted musician Clemency Thompson is playing for tourists on the streets of southern France when she receives an urgent text message. Her childhood friend, Lucy, is demanding her immediate return to London. It’s happening, says the message. The baby is back. Libby Jones was only six months old when she became an orphan. Now twenty-five, she’s astounded to learn of an inheritance that will change her life. A gorgeous, dilapidated townhouse in one of London’s poshest neighborhoods has been held in a trust for her all these years. Now it’s hers. As Libby investigates the story of her birth parents and the dark legacy of her new home, Clemency and Lucy are headed her way to uncover, and possibly protect, secrets of their own. What really happened in that rambling Chelsea mansion when they were children? And are they still at risk?

What I recently finished

I’ve been wanting to read The Secret History for a long time. It’s one of my daughter’s favorite books and she insisted I needed to read it in the fall, so I finally got around to reading it this month. I read The Goldfinch a few weeks before and really liked it, so I fully expected to love The Secret History. But I didn’t love it. And I’m still not sure exactly why. And I’m so bummed. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.

Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last – inexorably – into evil.

What I’ll Be Reading Next

I’m super excited about Maggie Stiefvater’s new novel Call Down the Hawk, which is a continuation in the Raven Cycle World. I would LOVE to reread The Raven King before I dive into this one, but I don’t know if that will happen. Call Down the Hawk will be available on November 5th!

Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it.  Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer . . . and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed. . .

One Week ‘Til Christmas is another ARC I received through Netgalley. (Yes, I have a problem.) I am a sucker for Christmas themed romances and even though this one sounded really similar to One Day in December that I read last year (and enjoyed) , I still couldn’t resist. It will be available on November 1st! Be on the lookout for a review to come soon!

Two people. One chance meeting. Seven days to Christmas. Isobel Bennett is waiting for the number 11 bus when a man quite literally falls into her lap. Snow is falling, Christmas lights are twinkling, and a gorgeous man with dark brown hair has just slipped on ice and is now pressed against Isobel. Isobel knows she’s not imagining the chemistry between them. But then his ride arrives and, embarrassed, he beats a hasty retreat, murmuring apologies – and Isobel realises only too late that she didn’t manage to catch his name… When she runs into him again the next morning, she decides it’s fate. It’s a second chance for Isobel and Tom – but there’s only one week until she’s leaving London for good. Seven days of enjoying all the festive delights the city has to offer: ice-skating at Somerset House, mulled wine on the Southbank, Christmas shopping at Liberty. There’s magic in the air and mistletoe in the trees – but what will happen when the week is over?

I’m also hoping that I could possibly squeeze in another Halloween-ish book before the end of the month, but that would be a Halloween miracle. 😉

Have I included anything you’ve read or are planning to read soon as well? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Wandering!
