Top Ten Tuesday: Super Long Book Titles

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is a Super Long Book Titles.

Hello Readers! I hope you’re all well. The biggest news I have to share right now is I’ve finally started reading the very hyped books in the Grishaverse! I finished Shadow and Bone, and I was so relieved that I liked it. I’m jotting down notes as I read through the collection and I’m planning on sharing them in a blog post when I’m done!

Today we’re looking at super long book titles. You know, those titles that make you cringe every time you have to write them in blog comments. Those titles that end up getting shortened to acronyms or one or two words. Maybe you even put off reading some books because of their long titles. Or maybe that’s just me. 😉 The first 6 will be books I’ve read and the last four will be books on my TBR!

(Link to Goodreads synopsis through book title.)

1

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

A remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.

I think the lengthy (and odd) title of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society kept me from reading it for a long time. But once I read it, I wished I hadn’t waited so long.

2

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend

Reminiscent of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this is a warm, witty book about friendship, stories, and love.

And if you loved Guernsey, you’ll probably love The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. This is another one that sat on my tbr for a couple of years, but it was delightful!

3

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

A lyrical novel about family and friendship from critically acclaimed author Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

I didn’t love Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe as much as most other readers, but I did still enjoy it. It is beautifully written.

4

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls.

I listened to the audio book of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and I laughed so much. We’re big fans of The Office, and I always enjoy Mindy’s dry humor.

5

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating

New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren (RoomiesBeautiful Bastard) tells the story of two people who are definitely not dating, no matter how often they end up in bed together.

I recently read Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating and I loved the characters. Humorous and steamy!

6

The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones

Daven McQueen’s Juniper Jones is a character for all ages in this sweet coming of age story set in 1950s Alabama.

I was so impressed with The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones. Juniper is a character I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

7

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

The hilarious and razor-sharp story of how one girl went from geek to patriarchy-smashing criminal mastermind in two short years, from the New York Times bestselling author of We Were Liars and Genuine Fraud.

I’ve had The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks sitting on my shelf for years. I’ve heard so many great things about it, and I always enjoy E. Lockhart.

8

Things We Didn’t Talk About When I Was a Girl

Exacting and courageous, Things We Didn’t Talk About When I Was a Girl is part memoir, part true crime record, and part testament to the strength of female friendships—a recounting and reckoning that will inspire us to ask harder questions and interrogate our biases.

I won a copy of Things We Didn’t Talk About When I Was a Girl, but I still haven’t read it. I hope to change that soon!

9

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires

Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires was ultra hyped. I still haven’t picked this one up, but I’m fairly confident I’ll enjoy it when I do.

10

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

The remarkable novel of two Southern friendships.

I’ve seen the film, but never read Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It’s definitely a must-read.

Have you read any of these? What’s your favorite book with a long title? Let me know in the comments!

Happy Wandering!

  1. FYI, I saw where Fannie Flagg is coming out with a new Whistle Stop book, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop, all about Bud Threadgoode. Being released Oct 27 I think. I should have added that one to my list this week!

  2. Nice! By the way, I just finished reading “The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop” which is a sequel to “Fried Green Tomatoes” – it is ALSO a must read! (It will be released on October 27th, and my review will go up on the same day.)

  3. The Potato Peel Pie society, haha. That does sound like a very amusing book.

I really hope to read the Southern Book Club’s Guide this month. It sounds pretty good!

    1. Guernsey is a lovely, lovely book. But that title. It made sense after I read it. 😉

The Southern Book Club sounds so very good. Seems like a perfect read for this time of year, too.

  4. Super interested in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, sad you didn’t love it though. Is there a review?

    1. Only a review on Goodreads. I read it pre-blog. 😉 I did enjoy it, but there were some plot points that didn’t seem organic to the story for me. But I know I’m in the minority. You should definitely pick it up!

  5. I really need to read Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating. Even though I hear a lot about the potato peel book (I so often abbreviate these long titles) I do put it off. Maybe not because of it’s length, but potato peels? Everyone says it’s good though.

    1. Josh and Hazel was so fun! I hope you get to pick it up soon. And I LOVED Guernsey (my short name for it ;))! The title makes sense after you read it, but yes, it put me off for years. I loved the film, as well. It was such a great adaptation!

  6. I chose Potato Peel and Aristotle & Dante too! The Grishaverse is on my TBR and I really need to read it before they do the whole TV show thing, argh. I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
