TBR Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Most Anticipated Book Releases for 2020 | July – December

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. This week’s prompt is Most Anticipated Releases for the Second Half of 2020.

Hello Readers! It doesn’t seem so long ago that I was sharing My Most Anticipated Book Releases of 2020 | January – June yet we here we are sharing the second half of the year’s releases! If you happened to see My Summer 2020 TBR from a few weeks ago, then you’ll see some repeats here. I’m determined not to request or buy very many new books in the second half of the year. I did well the first few months, but the last few months, I feel like I’ve been on a requesting and buying binge. Although, I’m not complaining. They were great books, but I need to get it under control. 😉

Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis

Synopsis: At sixteen, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email address…and a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached addressed, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens.

Now, fourteen years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that she’s desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that she’s the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationship—she’s given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off from her job. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, she’s convinced this is the moment he’ll reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it?

Emmie Blue is about to learn everything she thinks she knows about life (and love) is just that: what she thinks she knows. Is there such thing as meant to be? Or is it true when they say that life is what happens when you are busy making other plans? A story filled with heart and humor, Dear Emmie Blue is perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Evvie Drake Starts Over.

I love a good vacation-themed thriller, especially one that’s set in the summer in a beautiful location. I’m excited to get to this one!

The Night Swim by Megan Goldin

Synopsis: In this new thriller from the author of The Escape Room, a podcast host covering a controversial trial in a small town becomes obsessed with a brutal crime that took place there years before.

After the first season of her true crime podcast became an overnight sensation and set an innocent man free, Rachel Krall is now a household name―and the last hope for thousands of people seeking justice. But she’s used to being recognized for her voice, not her face. Which makes it all the more unsettling when she finds a note on her car windshield, addressed to her, begging for help.

The small town of Neapolis is being torn apart by a devastating rape trial. The town’s golden boy, a swimmer destined for Olympic greatness, has been accused of raping a high school student, the beloved granddaughter of the police chief. Under pressure to make Season Three a success, Rachel throws herself into interviewing and investigating―but the mysterious letters keep showing up in unexpected places. Someone is following her, and she won’t stop until Rachel finds out what happened to her sister twenty-five years ago. Officially, Jenny Stills tragically drowned, but the letters insists she was murdered―and when Rachel starts asking questions, nobody seems to want to answer. The past and present start to collide as Rachel uncovers startling connections between the two cases that will change the course of the trial and the lives of everyone involved.

Electrifying and propulsive, The Night Swim asks: What is the price of a reputation? Can a small town ever right the wrongs of its past? And what really happened to Jenny?

I enjoyed The Escape Room by Megan Goldin, so I’m excited to read her next book, especially since it’s getting even better reviews than its predecessor.

Bronte’s Mistress by Finola Austin

Synopsis: This dazzling debut novel for fans of Mrs. Poe and Longbourn explores the scandalous historical love affair between Branwell Brontë and Lydia Robinson, giving voice to the woman who allegedly corrupted her son’s innocent tutor and brought down the entire Brontë family.

Yorkshire, 1843: Lydia Robinson—mistress of Thorp Green Hall—has lost her precious young daughter and her mother within the same year. She returns to her bleak home, grief-stricken and unmoored. With her teenage daughters rebelling, her testy mother-in-law scrutinizing her every move, and her marriage grown cold, Lydia is restless and yearning for something more.

All of that changes with the arrival of her son’s tutor, Branwell Brontë, brother of her daughters’ governess, Miss Anne Brontë and those other writerly sisters, Charlotte and Emily. Branwell has his own demons to contend with—including living up to the ideals of his intelligent family—but his presence is a breath of fresh air for Lydia. Handsome, passionate, and uninhibited by social conventions, he’s also twenty-five to her forty-three. A love of poetry, music, and theatre bring mistress and tutor together, and Branwell’s colorful tales of his sisters’ elaborate play-acting and made-up worlds form the backdrop for seduction….

My favorite historical fiction is the kind based on real characters, and after having recently read My Plain Jane, I’m even more intrigued by Branwell.

Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie

Synopsis: Afi Tekple is a young seamstress whose life is narrowing rapidly. She lives in a small town in Ghana with her widowed mother, spending much of her time in her uncle Pious’s house with his many wives and children. Then one day she is offered a life-changing opportunity—a proposal of marriage from the wealthy family of Elikem Ganyo, a man she doesn’t truly know. She acquiesces, but soon realizes that Elikem is not quite the catch he seemed. He sends a stand-in to his own wedding, and only weeks after Afi is married and installed in a plush apartment in the capital city of Accra does she meet her new husband. It turns out that he is in love with another woman, whom his family disapproves of; Afi is supposed to win him back on their behalf. But it is Accra that eventually wins Afi’s heart and gives her a life of independence that she never could have imagined for herself.

A brilliant scholar and a fierce advocate for women’s rights, author Peace Adzo Medie infuses her debut novel with intelligence and humor. For readers of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Candice Carty-Williams, His Only Wife is the story of an indomitable and relatable heroine that illuminates what it means to be a woman in a rapidly changing world.

Mistletoe & Mr. Right by Sarah Morgenthaler

Synopsis:

How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.

Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can’t stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana’s determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town’s hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.

And really…how hard could it be?

The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it’s not getting any easier now that his dream girl’s back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it’s clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It’s an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.

I was soooo happy to get invited to read Morgenthaler’s next book in the Moose Springs, Alaska series! The Tourist Attraction was such a surprise hit for me, and I’m ready to return to the characters. And even better, it’s set at Christmas!

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

Synopsis: One Christmas wish, two brothers, and a lifetime of hope are on the line for hapless Maelyn Jones in In a Holidaze, the quintessential holiday romantic novel by Christina Lauren, the New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

I did NOT get approved to read Christina Lauren’s next book, although I’m still holding out hope that I’ll get invited at the last minute like I did for The Honey-Don’t List. 😉 But, looking at the positives, I can wait and read this one at Christmas if I don’t have to read it as an ARC.

Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer

Synopsis: In this young adult contemporary romance, a girl is suddenly gifted with the ability to cast instant karma on those around her—both good and bad.

Chronic overachiever Prudence Daniels is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and arrogant residents of her coastal town. Her dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled when, after a night out with her friends, she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her. Pru giddily makes use of the power, punishing everyone from public vandals to karaoke hecklers, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner and all-around mortal enemy. Soon, Pru begins to uncover truths about Quint, her peers, and even herself that reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed . . . love and hate.

Big Girl, Small Town by Michelle Gallen

Synopsis: Introducing Majella O’Neill, the lovable heroine of this darkly comic and highly original Irish debut.

Majella O’Neill is happiest out of the spotlight, away from her neighbors’ stares and the narrow-minded gossips of the small village in Northern Ireland where she grew up during the Troubles. She lives a quiet life caring for her alcoholic mother, working in the local chip shop, watching the regular customers come and go. She wears the same clothes every day (overalls, too small), has the same dinner each night (fish and chips, microwaved after the pubs close), binge watches episodes of Dallas from the comfort of her bed (best show on TV). She has a long list in her head of things that she sees the point of, including eating, sex, her da, her granny, and cleaning, and a much longer list, complete with categories and subcategories, of things “she isn’t keen on.” Sometimes, she thinks, that list can be condensed into one item: other people. People are just too confusing for her.

Big Girl, Small Town takes place in 2004 during the week after the funeral of Majella’s grandmother, whose mysterious death shatters Majella’s safe and predictable existence and makes her an object of fascination in the town. As much as she wants things to go back to normal, Majella comes to realize that maybe there is more to life than the chip shop, the pub, and the town of Aghybogey. And it might just be that from tragedy comes Majella’s one chance at escape.

I just discovered Layla yesterday, so of course I had to add it to my list. A thriller set at a bed-and-breakfast?? Count me in!

  1. Haven’t read any of Marissa’s books but this next one sounds good! Sadly I haven’t loved what I’ve read by the Lauren writing duo, but I’m curious about their upcoming release because it’s SEASONAL and also ‘Mistletoe’ looks SO cute, too. 🙂

    1. Oh I love The Lunar Chronicles! The Unhoneymooners is definitely my favorite of theirs–it set the bar high, but I have enjoyed The Honey-Don’t List and Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating. I’m curious to see how they do with a seasonal one, as well. 🙂

  2. I’m so out of the Marissa Meyer loop these days that I didn’t realize she was publishing a contemporary book this year. 🙂 I hope you’ll enjoy it

  3. Great list, Dedra! I have a few of these on my TBR even though I haven’t read the author’s first book(s) but I’m excited for all of them ? His Only Wife sounds really good and Insta Karma sounds super cute, so I’m definitely adding those to my TBR now! I hope you enjoy all these reads 🙂

    1. Oh yay! I’m glad you found something to add, but sorry I’m adding to your tbr. 😉 I’m so intrigued by His Only Wife. It reminded me of Stay With Me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ which I thought was really good. Hopefully we both enjoy it! <3

  4. I’m so looking forward to Instant Karma and In A Holidaze as well! And I just read the first Moose Springs books, and am eagerly anticipating the next one as well 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy all of these!

    1. Yes! I’ve only read The Lunar Chronicles (although, I do own Heartless) but it’s one of my favorite series. I’m excited to see what she does with a more contemporary style. 🙂

  5. So many great books! I need the Christina Lauren one for the holidays! I didn’t even know about that Colleen Hoover one!! I adding to the TBR, so I don’t forget!

  6. I’m so impressed by bloggers that have, like, control. I keep saying I’m going to learn how, and then I request five more books, and it all goes out the window, and I just sleep with one eye open, just in case the TBR monster gets me. xD

So many great-sounding books that I hadn’t heard of before! Mistletoe & Mr. Right sounds like it’d be a great Christmas read, and I’m already curious about that tagline. A moose? Hmmm. Hope you end up loving all of these when you get to read them!

    1. You know, I’m surprised by my self-control. Even though I did just request another ARC. But we won’t talk about that. ? Last year I was out of control and my reading year suffered because of it. When I looked back, I realized while most of the books I read were good, I didn’t love them. And it made me sad. I’m hoping to do better this year. But it’s sooooo hard to resist those ARCs!

Ha! The moose made an appearance in the first book, The Tourist Attraction, and he made quite an impression. ?
