Goodreads Monday: Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. To participate, you choose a random book off your Goodreads TBR to highlight.

Synopsis: A captivating and utterly original fairy tale about a girl cursed to be poisonous to the touch, and who discovers what power might lie in such a curse…

There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story.

As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison.

Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming…human or demon. Princess or monster.

My thoughts

I first noticed this book when it started appearing on other blogs. The cover definitely caught my attention! It’s one of the most stunning covers I think I’ve ever seen, even more beautiful in person. So, of course I was thrilled when it showed up as an ARC (advance reader copy) in my Strand book subscription, The Book Hookup. (Btw, a book subscription from an indie bookstore is a great way to support them during these difficult times.)

And while I might not would have picked up this book without the stunning cover, the reviews have been encouraging–most people saying it is very unique and not what they expected–so I’m eager to give it a chance. I have a mixed track record with fairytale retellings. (From what I understand, it’s inspired from a Persian myth) But hopefully this one will be a positive experience!

Let me know if you’ve read this one and what you thought about it–or if it’s on your tbr! Stay home, stay safe, and healthy!

Happy Wandering!

  1. Omg, if I could afford to subscribe to another book box I totally would sign up right away for The Strand’s! It looks so good and I LOVE the Strand ? I’m only subscribed to one book box coz of international shipping fees to the other side of the world ? I’m really excited to read this one! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!

    1. I hear ya! I’m only subscribed to the one, and it was a gift. I do like that it’s only quarterly so I don’t feel as guilty. Ha! I hope it’s a good read!
